ANC headphones?
In two weeks my wife and I are going on a Mediterranean cruise which will take us 10 hrs of flight time overnight. We are both interested (mildly) in active noise cancelling headphones or earbuds. I don’t really want to just buy the Bose and spend $700 between the two of us, but also don’t want to cheap out and not really get worthwhile performance. We imagine needing it to watch movies on the airline device so need 3.5mm plugs and will then also need lightening adapters for our iPhones. Since we are using the airline movie device, Bluetooth won’t work. We hope they can also be used for just sleeping with no music playing? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have bought maybe 4 different brands over the years . . . trying to avoid forking over for the Bose. Three years ago I finally gave up and bought the Bose earbuds. Worth every single penny!
I normally HATE earbuds, but the Bose are so soft and fit so well. And the case/device is very small. I am glad I didn't buy the big over the ear Bose - the case is clunky and they are heavy. The earbuds are heaven . . .

My SO just got the Bose noise-cancelling over-the-ear headphones, and he is in love. The case is pretty streamlined, actually, and they are not heavy. (You won't get noise-cancelling from earbuds, either.) He flies a lot, and feels they have aded to his comfort immeasurably.
I have the non noise-cancelling Bose, and I love mine, too. My case is slightly larger. They block out ambient noise well enough for me, but I don't travel long haul very often.
We both use them often with no music playing but just for the quiet.
I highly recommend Bluetooth. Any pair of Bluetooth headphones that you buy will come with a cord to plug in when necessary, so that's not a concern. But not having to fuss with a cord when using a Bluetooth source is really, really nice.
All that said, take a look at CNET's roundups of recommended headphones with various features and at various price points. There are a lot of brands that compete with Bose.

Not my experience -- they are as good as the over ear. I travel long haul a lot and the very long battery life and really good noise cancellation make them worth it IMO.

We just flew 10.5 hours, and I watched a lot of videos on my iPad and on the seat back screen.
I don’t have noise-cancelling headphones, but mine worked fine. (Did not try to sleep with headphones on.)
Still, after 8 hours or so, they became uncomfortable on my ears. I switched to earbuds, which kill my ears after a very short time.
First world problems. Ha

I have had asked this same question before and still haven't figure out an answer. I want noise cancelling feature but without having to play music or connect to any other device. Over the ear or buds either one.

suze, DH had something like this, that he liked.
Too bad he left it on the plane, on the first leg of our European journey!

suze: Maybe go into a local Bose store and try out the earbuds. The device is teensy and I often use them without connecting to media of any sort.
After trying them, they may not be for you but I think its worth a shot.

Thanks janisj. Yes I need to do that.
I only shopped once in person and at a Best Buys but they havd all the expensive ones locked up and clerks no one around to help you so no way to try them out. The one cheaper pair of over-the-ear on display that I tried did *nothing* to block sound and was clearly meant for listening to music or whatever.
Bose price point is not an issue for me, it's that I want to make sure for the $$ I'm getting the feature I need in the most comfortable and practical way (over the ear or buds).
MoBro, thanks for that link. But I wouldn't be comfortable being blindfolded on the plane ;-)

That is why you might want to go to an actual Bose store. They always seem to be very helpful. I was totally 'sure' I didn't want earbuds, but they let me try them and I was converted. But they are like shoes - one person's heaven is another's bad blisters. LOL
