Typhoid - shot or pills?
It's been 2 years since our last typhoid vaccine, and we're due for another booster.
CDC now shows a set of 4 capsules for typhoid prevention as an alternative to the shot.
Am I way behind the times, or is this something new?
Has anyone had the capsules? Any reactions? Can they be taken as a booster after using the shots? The pills are good for 5 years which would be nice.
Thanks.

The capsules have existed for at least 20 years. I can say that because 20 years ago was the first time I took them, and I've made a point to renew the immunization every five years since then.
You'd get the capsules as a prescrpiton at a pharmacy. Most pharmacies won't likely keep them in stock, but can order them from their wholesaler with a day or two turnaround. Ask at your pharmacy. They go by the brand name Vivotif Berna if the pharmacist doesn't know. It's uncommon enough that they may not.
It's four capsules, taken one every other day, so days 1, 3, 5, and 7 over the course of a week. The capsules need to be refrigerated. It would start a five-year period of immunization.

Thanks, Jeff-
20 years, eh? Even now, my travel clinic only offers the shot, so I had never thought of checking out an alternative. Pills sure sound a lot better - they last longer and they may be cheaper too - and our clinic isn't even nearby. Will call my local MD tomorrow for an Rx.

I can't see that there's much debate in deciding between between the two. The oral vaccine gives you two extra years of immunity, although I suppose some people say, just give me the shot and I'll be done with it. Just remember to take the capusles every other day, exactly like you're supposed to. Don't miss any doses during the week.

Not very effective max 70% or so
really only indicated for high risk groups
like folks who will be eating a lot of street food
or volunteering in refugee camps.
So I review www.mdtravelhealth.com and skip it if possible.
ALWAYS am careful with food/water either way.
beacuse Travellers Diarrhea far more likely...
Am sure to pack the right medications in my travel kit.
