Crime in Buenos Aires, Argentina

We fell for this scam and a wallet got stolen. My husband was first sprayed by what looked like bird poop but was actually a relish/mustard substance sprayed onto your clothing, then the couple will bring it to your attention of offer their help to clean you up. As I declined their assistance, they still came over to help. The female distracted me and said I had poop on my clothing. By that time, it was too late. The wallet was gone and the couple fled away in a get away car.

These thieves are slick. They operate in a group. One person is the watchdog (giving body signals) to the couple who will do the crime, then a get away car.

This scam happened in Centro area.

I'm sorry about that DLinden and I hope it did not spoil your "2+ week of travel to El Calafate, El Chalten, Iguazu Falls and Buenos Aires."

Did this happen over a weekend, DLinden?

This is an old trick and we have warned about it repeatedly, most recently in my "Buenos Aires: our downtown area during weekends." thread.

See: http://www.fodors.com/community/sout...g-weekends.cfm

I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

Hola avrooster - We really enjoyed our trip overall and found Argentina very beautiful in all aspects. This did happen on a Saturday morning walking from San Martin heading over to Recolta.

We would travel again to other parts of Argentina given another opportunity but need to rest for now after 23 hours of flight.

Adios

DLinden - that happened to us as well!!! We were targeted by two females and our wallet and camera got stolen. I could not believe how fast and slick they were. I'm sorry this happened to you too.

I'm sorry about that, rampup82!

Could you tell us a little more, such as the area, day of the week and other details forum members could find helpful?

Thank you.

this incident occurred while we were heading to the antique fair in san telmo. the streets after getting off the subway and leading up to san telmo are pretty quiet (not many pedestrians) so be careful around here. i don't remember the exact day of the week this occurred, but it was in the morning.

San Telmo is fully active as a fair only on Sunday, so that is probably the day this happened, rampup82?
