Buying airline tickets from Expedia.com.au

My wife and I will be independently traveling around South America from Oct -Dec 2010.

Rather than purchase an air pass, which was too expensive, plus we are flying with Aerolineus Argentinas, I have noticed there are some good specials on Expedia at present for internal flights with South America.

I have never purchased tickets this way. Therefore I have the following questions, which may appear a bit dumb but any answers received will give me peace of mind.

1. Is this a good way to purchase tickets?

and

2. Is it wise to purchase the tickets so far in advance?

Any assistance from anyone who has purchased tickets this way would be much appreciated.

Honestly the cheapest prices are almost always found

booking with an internal agent like

www.wowargentina.com

www.argentinaforless.com

or for internet

www.despegar.com usually has best prices

usually not as cheap as internal purchase.

LAN in particular is noted for ripping off

tourists charging 3-5 times what locals pay.

Do not use them if possible.

I have used expedia.co.uk on many occasions and have got some really good deals over the years. However, if anything does go wrong it (and it probably will in SA!) they can be difficult to contact by phone. As you are looking at the Australian website I assume that you are based there? If so, have you tried http://www.trailfinders.com.au/ they are great for putting together complex trips as well as straightforward long haul flights. I have used them a lot in the UK and can't fault their service.
In my experience, these days it is nearly always cheaper to book as far in advance as possible - buying with a credit card usually provides added protection in the event of problems (at least it does in the EU).

I disagree with Quovadis about LAN; while not perfect, by reports, we have had excellent experiences with them to several Arg. destinations.

From the fora I read, this seems to be the usual xperience of LAN.

Have a great trip to Argentina,

PS I understand the difference in charges is not unique to LAN - A Arg and other airlines have price differentials for citizens/non residents. This may well feel like a 'rip-off,' but it is not an uncommon practice in many countries.

You can still buy an airpass if you are flying to South America via Aerolineas Argentinas. You can fly 1900 miles for just $319. You can get more info about airpasses at www.cheapflightbuenosaires.com/CheapAirpass.html
