Visiting the Amazon in Brazil
We are going to Brazil for the third time in Dec/January, this time focusing on the Amazon. I'm hoping someone can help me work out where to stay.
I liked the look of Ariaú Towers outside Manaus, but a Brazilian friend who went there some years ago said this was very fake, with poor birds kept near the hotel by having their wings clipped. Has anyone been recently?
The other place that looked really interesting was a plane flight away from Manauas in Tefé.
Has anyone stayed at the Uacari Lodge in Tefé in the Mamirauá reserve?
Alternatively is a boat trip a better way to see the Amazon?

Ich möchte Sie als Ziel der Amazonas-rainforest.Now empfehlen, es ist die beste Zeit, um den Amazonas zu sehen, für weitere Informationen.

We just came back from the Amazon where we stayed at http://www.anavilhanaslodge.com/, a 5 hour car ride from Manaus. It was great. I'll give more details in my trip report. I'm glad we didn't stay on a boat since the river is very wide and there's not much interesting going on unless you're on a small tributary.

We spent three nights at the Ariau in April - first sight and first room, we were very disappointed, especially as it is so expensive, DH even wanted to leave ASAP, but they upgraded our room, and our guide, Romero, and his offsider, who were with us at meals and on all the tours, made the whole experience most enjoyable. We ended up really enjoying our time there, especially the jungle trecking. Do they do that from a cruise? Driving a golf buggy around the 8 kilometres of walkway through the resort was fun too. The meals were adventuresome and tasty, if you stick to fish or chicken. Beef not so good, according to DH.
One of the macaws flew up to me early one morning on top of one of the towers, where I had climbed to watch the sunrise. He certainly didn't have his wings clipped, and the spider monkeys all over the resort are really cute.

Thanks Carbella, it's the ara birds that had clipped wings, my Brazilian friend, had spent 6 months in the Amazon and went with a biologist so they were especially attuned to the artifical.
We have decided to go to the Mamirauá reserve as it got a very good review for ecotourism in the Sydney Morning Herald:
