Ever heard of "free speech"?

What you find "stupid and insulting", seems "interesting" to me and that is my privilege.

I couldn't get the second link to work. The poster has every right to say they did not enjoy their trip. Not everyone is a fan of everywhere. What was very strange was the bit by brightviolet in that post(maybe the second link?). Ordering Waldorf salad in BA? Try a good Rusa instead. The people don't speak English? My goodness. The old people smell? Try the London tube during a heat wave; everyone smells. The check was handed to her husband and bookings were in his name? Enjoy. Saying you have been to a lot of countries does not mean you understood any of them. Speaking a lot of languages is not the same as listening in any of them.

Stupid and Insulting was my description of the not very Bright Violet and her remarks.

From your reading TripAdvisor, you know how I felt on that thread.

Personally, I just don't find much interest in visitors being insulting .. I think the people here are over-all extremely pleasant, polite and kind and helpful.

Therefore, to encourage people to read worthless remarks such as hers, made me wonder what you found to be interesting.

This was a good comment from one of the TripAdvisor Destination Experts... a lovely young Porteña .... <BLUE>“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” - James Michener

I am sad to say that I am not surprised with some of the responses to this post. I am an avid traveler and I've visited this site for years. I love this site because of all the different views/opinions that are often posted here.

This was a good comment on the second posting. I found the replies uglier than the perhaps uneducated opinions.

I think everyone should feel comfortable posting the good, the bad and the ugly without being mocked or criticized. I would like to think that we are all pretty smart and would not draw conclusions based on someone else’s opinion.

"Responses" to this post on Fodors or the post on TripAdvisor?

If you are speaking of the "reviews" on TA, then I agree that people should be able to post good bad and ugly if it is not personal .. but to say a person smelled, therefore condemn the city and its people or that No one spoke English?? in a South American country? .. which was uglier ? the post or the replies? I think it depends on how you feel about the place being criticized and the people in it.
I have lived here for over 2 years now and I cannot think of any instance where I would have posted about the people in this city in any but an admiring and appreciative way .. so forgive me if I , at least, take umbrage ( as did a few others on that thread) at a visitors remarks about the city and the people in it.
and if anyone read the entire thread, they would have known that I posted to remadrid that I did not include him and apologized to him for my remarks sounding like I was including him.

And this is why I wondered why someone thought that ill informed and ugly remarks posted about this city were interesting enough to post here also. That is why I asked.

Oh, I think negative reviews are interesting. They tell us things praise does not. Everywhere has it's dark side. Brightviolet just had some surprising complaints for someone who has traveled before, some very funny. I imagine tourists now having a sneaky sniff of the elderly to form their own opinion. The OP on the first thread had her opinions and some would agree with them and some not. It shouldn't be taken personally if we have differing opinions. It certainly made an interesting read.

LOL Huentetu, I am going to pay special attention to the elderly now lol .. actually, the ladies here, in my experience , tend to wear some really nice perfumes so my problem is that I often want to stop one and ask her what the scent is ... I am afraid I will say the wrong thing when I ask, What perfume are you wearing, you smell so good ... and they will hit me and run away

Sorry to say, I thought the replies were uglier. I know people like to defend their favorite places and where they live, but really I like to read warts and all comments and just laughed at the OPs comments about the stinky old people. The problem with attacking posters is that you lose the Lurkers who might have posted a valuable review.

Glad you like the photos, and yes definitely go to Peru, which has its own set of warts.

I make a distinction between the OP pointing out the less glamorous side of BA (eg, dog poop everywhere you look) and her expectation that everyone should speak English. The former is pointing out a "wart" to fellow travelers. The latter is a text book definition of an "ugly American" who judges everything by American standards and remains ignorant of local language and culture.

I thought several of the responses gently chided the OP for her ethnocentrism...Purizo's tounge in cheek post about an Argentino visiting New York did a particularly good job of pointing out the foolishness of approaching a new culture with the idea that it should be just like our own...

I like to read the good and the bad about any palce I am likely to visit if only so I can get areasonable idea of what to expect but many of the comments made in both posts are so xenphobic I wonder why some of these people bother to travel outside of their home town at all! In fact some of the comments serve only to reinforce my long held belief that the rest of travelling public would be well served if some of these people had there passports revoked (only joking!).

Yes there is dog crap all over the place, but forewarned, I managed to avoid (almost all of) it. I took note of the warnings re scams /counterfeit notes/muggings and the generally dangerous streets of BA but not once did I feel tat all threatened or in any sort of danger (maybe I was lucky or just stupid or maybe it is not as bad as some would make out?)

I loved Argentina as a country and it is certainly one of my favourite places in the world but I do confess to being a tad disappointed by BA - it was not the most stunningly beautiful city I had been led to believe.

Finally, as one who has commuted to work every day for many years on the London Underground I had to smile at Huentetu's comment: "Try the London tube during a heat wave; everyone smells. " A little secret, it is all a ploy by we English to keep jolly foreigner at bay so we can get a seat on the trains!!!

Flintstones.....the "eternal unsatisfied" will probably complain in Heaven that the temperature is just too perfect year round...and ask why it can't have four distinct seasons like back home..
