Tango Shows in Buenos Aires

Hi,
We have two days in Buenos Aires and would like to see one of the "touristy" tango/dinner shows. There are so many, we wonder if anyone has a recommendation. Also looking for city tour guides. Thanks for your suggestions.

We have been to several of the 'touristy variety' (don't ask why) and really enjoyed La Ventana. The food was good, too, though not as wonderful as the better restaurants.

AVOID VIEJO ALMACEN - it was just awful !!!

The show at Carlos Gordel gets good reviews, as does the new one in Puerto Madero.

Enjoy your trip and the show. ~MarnieWDC

I've been to a tango show at Cafe Tortoni (www.cafetortoni.com.ar) last year.
It was a nice low profile show, and also not very expensive. You don't have to dine there, but you can if you like.

Also if you want to listen to Tango, there is a really nice free show of the Buenos Aires City Orchestra every Thursday, if I'm not mistaken, at noon, at Teatro Alvear.

Also went to Cafe Tortoni and enjoyed the show 4 a fraction of the cost of many of the other venues.

On my trip last June, I went to Tango Piazzolla. The food was very good, but oddly presented (eg layed mashed sweet and white potatos in a shot glass). The show was about 15 minutes longer than I needed it to be, but it did a good job of showing the history of tango and the various types of tango songs and dances.

Way more fun than a tango show is Opera Pampa. This is also a dinner show, but takes place outdoors and includes some amazing horsemanship as well as singing and dancing. The history presented is similar to the history of the Western United State, but it probably helps you follow the story if read the brochure they give you especially if you don't speak Spanish.

For any kind of evening show, I'd arrange my own remise or taxi. My experience was that the transport included was disorganized, late and unfamiliar with the location of hotels. It took one driver 4 tries to get me back to my hotel even though I speak Spanish, gave him directions and knew the exact address.

La Viruta is not a tango show; it is a dance club in a basement. Alot of fun, but the tango set doesn't start until at least two in the morning.

The rest of my family saw the tango show at the place where Opera Pampa is and they thought it was really fantastic. They thought the music and the dancing were both really wonderful. We actually intended to book the Opera but it wasn't showing on the night we went.

Another vote for Cafe Tortoni . We went there in December and really enjoyed it. The venue is great and you have the option of a show in the small room or the larger room. We chose teh smaller room and loved it. The earlier you book the better the seat ou will get. We sat right at the front by the stage so close that we clould see the patches on the dancers shoes!. The music was amazing as was the dancing. There are afew photos on our blog:

Hello!

Hmmm... For Tango and dinner I would recommend La Ventana, its one of the most classic Tango places, you could also go to Boca Tango, the neighbourhood is great and you get to learn more of the history behind Tango... or you could try a "Milonga" - a variation of Tango, the setting tends to be less formal but the atmosphere is great as its a faster type of dance and thats where the Argentines go to dance Tango and you can often take lessons!I would recommend you do a tour, there are packages available where they collect you, everything is included and the extra information makes it more enjoyable!

Have fun!

You may consider Piazzolla Tango, located in Guemes Promenade on Florida St, or La Esquina de Carlos Gardel in Abasto.
Tango Palace is a show like Opera Pampa held at La Rural in Palermo. It's about the history of tango and it is said to be an excellent show since it combines very talented dancers with an amazing scenery. Here is the link to the official site but I'm sure if it's in English: http://www.tangopalace.net/default.asp?secportal=tango, anyway you can send them an email in case you have any questions

I hope you have a great time in our city!
