Train from Urubamba to Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu- please help!
Does anyone know if we can pick up a train in Urubamba to AC? What is the schedule, how do we locate the schedule? And should we pre-order tickets? Our guidebook says there is a train station in Urubamba and that the Sacred Valley Railway runs trains from there to AC, but we are unable to find any information about this online. We seem to have determined that the trains run by Perurail don't have Urubamba stops, at least not as an online option. Can anyone help clear this up? We are staying in Urubamba and ideally want to take an early morning train to see MP as a daytrip. Thanks for any insight or suggestions!!!

Not an expert, but the only stations that I know of that have service to AC are Cusco (now leaving from Poroy from what I have read) and Ollantaytambo, down the road about 20 km from Urubamba. I understand there are local busses that run frequently between the two towns, or you can arrange for a cab to take you there.
You don't say when you are going, but regardless, you should definitely pre-purchase your train tickets and not wait until you get to Peru to do so.

I think you'll have to get a taxi or bus to Ollantaytambo.
www.perurail.com
See Ollanta-MP
There are some really early trains...like 5:37 am (I think that's a Backpacker train).
Do book ahead on line with perurail.

if you email a travel agency in Cuzco they would be able to help you. We booked the short inca trail and tour with them on line and had no problems. We were so impressed that when we were there we also booked a tour to Lake Titicaca with them.
I dealt with a woman called Amber, not sure if she is still there, but the email is

The closest station to Urumbamba is Ollantaytambo. 15/20 mins by bus (1sole) or taxi (15 sole). Buses do start very early and leave from the station on the main road when full and taxis care also plentiful along the main road and around the buse station. On return the buses leave from outside the market in the cormer of the square in Olly. Taxis leave from the station (where the chances of getting ripped off are high!) or in the main square (bargain hard). You can book train tickets at the station in Cusco.
As you are planning to leave early you may wish to arrange a taxi to Olly in advance but I would recommend the "experience of teh bus for your return" we did it every day for three weeks on our daily commute in to Olly..
