while mired by poor government and poverty, the country is working its way back. Life there seems simple and enjoyable for most while the economy struggles to recover.

We enjoyed decent hotels and good food during our trip and our driver jose vega provided excellent services to us.

We experienced corruption first hand by having to pay-off two different immigration officials because of a visa problem we had which was created the the consulate in NYC

I have around eight trips to Paraguay under my belt. Most have been work-related. I love the place. It's this quirky little country that nobody ever visits. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.

Last time I was there was about a year ago, and for the first time, I ran into other American visitors. It was such a surprise.

I forgot to say: How exciting that must have been for your wife to return after all those years. That had to have been the best part of the trip;

she was really excited about this part of the trip. she was also surprised and pleased to see how moderinized things have become....some of her family, who travelled there over the last 10 years, have reported not much change since 1955.

the people are very nice indeed.

We have been to Paraguay twice and have hosted 2 exchange students from Asuncion. We have always loved the country despite it's problems, the people are wonderful. It's also one of the few places that Americans can go these days and feel wealthy. On our last trip, the mother of one of our "exchange daughters" drove us to several gorgeous churches, the ruins of one of the Missions, the Falls in Brazil and into the Chaco (Ciudad de Hayes). In the future we plan to spend more time in the Chaco, maybe staying at one or more of the ranches. My favorite memory of Asuncion was back in 1987, spending siesta at the pool at the Hotel Cecilia, then getting out to watch the wood fired steam train leave for Argentina.

My first trip there was in 1989, so I can't compare it to anything before then. I think Paraguay has modernized quite a bit. There is still something very Old World about the place though.
