Kagoshima

Due to cock ups with Korea Air we now have an evening and a morning in Kagoshima then seperately an afternoon and evening (don’t ask!) instead of two back to back nights.

bearing that in mind - where would you focus? Sakurijima? We’ll be getting the ferry to and from Yakushima and hopefully visiting Aso so is it still a good idea to go to Sakurijima? Or maybe focus instead on downtown Kagoshima or go north to Sengan-En?

we’ll be there right at the end of the month so we might miss full bloom Sakura but should still be lots to see

I've only passed through Kagoshima station and airport on the way to Ibusuki and Kirishima Onsen.

I googled for events in Kagoshima. Some are in Kagoshima-ken (prefecture) outside of Kagoshima-shi.
  • Spring Tree Market: March 15 – May 6, 2026. A long-standing spring tradition held daily (10:00–17:00) at the Kotsukigawa Left Bank Green Belt. It features a vast array of bonsai, foliage plants, and garden trees for sale, along with expert workshops.
  • Dream Chasing Nagashima Flower Festa: Starts March 28, 2026. Located at Sunset Hill and other venues in Nagashima Town, this festival showcases bougainvillea and various spring blooms. Sunday events often include a "Potato Festival" with digging experiences.
  • 37th Izumi Cherry Blossom Festival: March 29, 2026. Held at Special Attack Monument Park, this event features local food stalls, dance performances, and free gifts like rock azalea seedlings for attendees.

Sports & Recreation
  • Kagoshima Marathon 2026: March 1, 2026. The city's premier sporting event includes a full marathon (42.195 km) and a fun run (8.9 km). The course starts at the Dolphin Port site and passes through the city center.
  • Satsuma OidoN League 2026: Continuing through March 8, 2026. This baseball league features matches at various venues, including Akune City, where university teams like Rikkyo University compete.
  • Forest Therapy Walks: Available throughout March. Guided or self-guided walks along the Kagoshima Shiroyama Nature Walking Trail focus on tranquility and "grounding" in nature.

  • Illumination Event: Chugen Park in Isa City will host a cherry blossom illumination from March 20 to April 5, 2026, with approximately 1,000 trees lit from 18:00 to 21:00.

If you happen to be at Kagoshima Station and have time, go outside the front entrance and just stand and wait for 10 minutes for a man to approach you speaking Engllish. Good guy. I think was an English teacher and his hobby was to practice the language and help tourists. I mention this because I am not the only one who have had the pleasure. He might still be alive.
(or maybe that was Kumamoto)

With just an evening and a morning, I'd pick Sengan-En over Sakurajima. The ferry to Sakurajima is only 15 minutes and runs every 15 to 20 min, so it feels like a quick trip. But once you're on the island there's not much within walking distance. You need the loop bus, and a proper visit ends up being 4 to 6 hours. Not great for your window unless you just want to ride the ferry over, look around the port area, and come back.

Sengan-En is about 30 minutes by bus from Kagoshima-Chuo station. The clever thing about it is the garden was designed with Sakurajima as borrowed scenery, so you get the volcano view without crossing the water. The old Shimazu residence, the garden itself, and the Satsuma Kiriko glass factory next door could fill a solid morning. That leaves you time to get moving afterward.

For your evening, Tenmonkan downtown is walkable and low effort. Get kurobuta tonkatsu (Kagoshima black pork) somewhere. It's the local thing and hard to get wrong.

Cherry blossoms end of March in Kagoshima, first bloom is usually around the 22nd to 26th down there, peak closer to March 30. You might catch early color depending on your exact dates.

We spent 2 nights in Kagoshima and really enjoyed the vibe of the city. Because it was on the rainy side when we were there, we didn’t get to explore the city much but we really enjoyed the afternoon visiting Sakurajima. We took the bus around the small island and got off at one of the viewing points. At the base, there’s a walking path and several foot baths which were a lot of fun. We also visited Mt. Aso and the experiences are completely different.

We took the ferry from Kagoshima to Yakushima and the latter was definitely a highlight of our trip.
