7 nights Big Island, Hawaii, itinerary
My wife and I will be visiting the Big Island for the first time this January. We’ll be there for 7 nights (we’re both in our 50s) and I’m working on an itinerary. Our main goals are to enjoy some great beaches, take in scenic vistas and unique landscapes, and of course spend time at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. We’ll have a rental car. Right now, I’m thinking of splitting our stay: 4 nights on the Kona/Kohala side and 3 nights near Volcano Park or Hilo. Here’s where I’m struggling: - Kona vs. Kohala Coast: Our budget is under $400/night. We definitely want to visit Hapuna Beach and I’ve heard the north shore is breathtaking. I’ve found a small, inexpensive rental house in the Hookela/Waimea area (about 15 minutes from Hapuna, convenient for exploring the north, but 40–45 minutes to Kona). Is it too far out? I’ve also seen a condo in Waikoloa Beach (walking distance to ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach/A-Bay). Is Waikoloa a good base? Or should we stay closer to Kona town? We’re not big on snorkeling. - Volcano Park vs. Hilo: For the last 3 nights, would you recommend staying right near Volcano Park, or is Hilo a better option? Any advice on how best to split our time and where to stay would be much appreciated

enjoy some great beaches,
The Big Island is different, pretty in different kind of way, striking but not scenic to me.
We did a 4 night Kona and 3 night Hilo split, it works.
I hope you see a volcanic eruption, it made my trip.

Please be careful. There are mnay illegal rentals you can find online for the Hawaiian islands. You need to check that the place you are considering is officially registered and legal, to avoid a surprise when you arrive!
If you have not yet, do check over on Trip Advisor for the Island of Hawaii (aka Big Island) for much more viewership than here.

Would you recommend 2 or 3 nights near Volcano Park/Hilo?

Years ago we took a trip and spent a week at the Hilton Waikoloa resort. During that trip, we booked an inn at Volcano (without checking out) and did a big loop of the island, spending the night on the other side. It worked for us and gave us a chance to see Volcano NP. I really didn't have a lot of interest to spend more time on the rainy side of the island. It worked for us. Just wanted to share that in case it could be an option for you.
Adding - We ate at the Thai restaurant next to the hardware store in Volcano (owned by the same people at the time) and that dinner was some of the best Thai food I'd ever had. They fly "home" for spices and the food was fantastic. I just checked the Google reviews and they seem to still be strong. Thai Thai Bistro and Bar.

The Big Island is indeed big. As I recall it is an island the size of the state of CT and no matter where you stay or break the trip up you will do a lot of driving. It’s been a while and I was there twice for conventions pre-pandemic with my husband staying at the Hilton Waikoloa. The first time was in beginning of December and the second time in January. I think the island is so very interesting because of the varied climate and topography and distinct locations so different from one another. I can’t recall that it is especially beach focused. One of the times we were there featured a Pacific storm in which guests were asked to remain in their rooms away from the windows because of severe wind and when we did make it to Volcano National Park we were met with stormy weather and super windy weather plus because of the rain the paths were muddy and you don’t want to bring mud into your rental car. In Hilo we saw the banyan tree grove and had lunch but there is more to do there, a museum about previous tsunamis. We did visit a coffee farm one day as well as the tropical botanical gardens.
