Playa Avellana - Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Just looking to find out if the waves are huge here? I've read that in a few places but I was hoping they were more moderate for body boarding and body surfing for a 12 and 14 year old...pretty experienced ocean swimmers. If you know anything about his beach and the waves during July - August I'd love to hear!

Playa Avellana does see some solid surf, especially in July and August, since that is during Costa Rica’s rainy season. Swells can get pretty big on certain days, especially in the afternoon. That said, mornings are often calmer and better for younger or less experienced surfers.

There is usually a range of wave sizes depending on the tide and weather. Locals often say "Lola's side" of the beach is a bit gentler and more beginner-friendly. You will still want to keep a close eye on conditions each day, but plenty of families go there for boogie boarding.

If they are confident swimmers and you stay within sight, they should have a great time. It is a beautiful spot.
