My 16 yr old daughter wants to visit The Hamptons for Fall Break, 9/29-10/4. She loves small towns, old mansions, beach towns. She's not a fan of big cities but I was going to try to do 1-2 days in NYC since she's never been there. We're coming from Atlanta and I appreciate any tips on what to see/do and how to manage the ferrys and traffic. She's also not a big foodie and doesn't really like seafood, she's more into good picture spots and cute shopping.

1. Sunday-Tues Arrive in Providence Drive to Newport, Stay in Newport 2 nights (Cliff Walk and The Breakers)
2. Tuesday Drive from Newport to New London, maybe stop in Mystic, ferry to Orient Point and then to Sag Harbor (is that possible in 1 day?)
3. Tues and Wednesday night stay in Sag Harbor, explore Montauk, maybe shopping at Amagensett Square?
4. Thursday head to Long Island, Stay around Patchogue? ) Maybe explore Fire Island?
5. Friday Drive to NYC, drop off rental car somewhere
6. Friday-Sunday, stay near Times Square, Explore Central Park, Staten Island Ferry for the Statue of Liberty, See a broadway show
7. Sunday - Travel home

It is an ambitious plan as you plan to do quite a lot in a short time and of course all depends on ferry schedules. You could stay in Sag Harbor and explore the Hamptons and Montauk. If interested in art, you can check out the days and hours of operation for the Krasner Pollack House, the home and studio of Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner. It is a memorable experience but availability is very limited.

For Newport, there are additional mansions besides The Breakers and you can get a multi-mansion pass with different options.

When you take the ferry to Orient Point you are on Long Island. You would need to check the ferry schedule to see how doable it is. Same with the Fire Island Ferry schedule from Patchogue, as it may be a bit more limited during the week in late September although the weather could be spectacular. The ferry from Patchogue goes to Davis Park/ Ocean Ridge and you walk on wooden boardwalks. It is very quiet and not much in the way of services and no cute little shops if that is what you are looking for. I wouldn't recommend overnighting in Patchogue. You could return your rental car at LaGuardia or JFK depending on where you are flying home from and either get to Manhattan by cab or public transportation depending on where you are staying and timing.

You can have your fill of shopping or window shopping in East Hampton as although there are smaller local shops and restaurants, designer shops line the street. Not sure what Amagansett Square is ... but if you are driving to Montauk, you will pass the classic Long Island eatery in Amagansett called simply Lunch and I would recommend it as a good place to stop for lunch.

Yes, I am concerned it might be too much. Would we be better off skipping Newport, just flying in and out of JFK and sticking to the trains/ubers rather than a rental car? Is there enough to keep us busy in the Hamptons for 4 days? Do we need a car for the 4 days to get around?

If you do end up coming through Orient Point, you might take a look at some of the towns on the North Fork, like Greenport.

It's your trip so I really cannot decide if including Newport is too much. If you plan then to fly to JFK, are you deciding between renting a car or taking the train? Since I live on Long Island, I've never been out East to the Hamptons or Montauk or Sag Harbor without a car and I think it might be a problem dealing with Ubers to go places and deal with return trips to your hotel. There is much to do but it depends on what your interests are. I mentioned the Krasner Pollack House but there are other art museums and sculpture gardens but you might not be interested all that much and not every place will be open every day. There are lots of wineries but your daughter is too young. There are plenty of spa places and yoga places and conceivably it might be beach weather.
