Thailand in September! Planning help requested!
Planning our first time visit to Thailand in Sep. for a birthday celebration [so unable to change dates]. Because it is the rainy season should we not plan to go to any island? Currently thinking Bangkok 3-4 nights; Chiang Mai 4-5 nights; an overnight stay at an elephant/nature preserve; and 4 nights at a beach resort. We are an active couple in our late 60's and care less about partying than experiencing the cultural, natural and aesthetics of the region. Please help!

There is very much a concern about the Elephant reserves in Thailand. Many use practices considered downright 'unethical,' which allow for highly unnatural human-elephant interaction.
I have seen a list of places that are considered ethical. However, I am not so sure. Even these places seem to have photos of playing with or bathing the elephants. I do not know what the divide is. Maybe it is elephant rides?
You may not share these concerns. But I do want to tell you that not everyone's reaction to your fun family photos with the elephants will be received in a positive manner. It's quite possible that most people on this board would be reluctant to participate.
