I am so sorry that the texts are not displayed. The report is accompanied by texts, but they disappeared when I posted. I suspect that it is due to the inclusion of Korean texts. I am still fixing these.

This is a trip report on a recent visit to Onyang Hot springs in Dec 2024. I found this destination by chance. I intended to head for Busan by Korean High Speed rail KTX immediately after landing at Incheon airport. ‘Unfortunately’, I didn’t realise KTX can be fully booked very quickly on a Friday. Without securing a train ticket to Busan, I had to look for alternatives. Along the KTX stations, I found Onyang Hot springs quite accessible from Incheon airport.
I am not a Korean speaker and do not understand Korean characters at all. Don’t feel daunted by the language barrier to take the road less travelled. Google translate camera function comes to rescue all the time.

Background information:
  • Duration: 1N2D
  • Inter city transport: Airport express to Seoul station; KTX from Seoul station to Cheon Asan station; Metro: Asan station to Onyang Oncheon station
  • Accommodation: Onyang Hot spring hotelcirca 47 GBP per night for a standard room
  • Transport planning app: Google Map or Naver map
    • A quick note that you won’t find too much information in Google map. Most restaurant reviews are found in Naver map instead. Naver map mobile app offers an English interface with contents translated to English.
Day 1: Arrival in the evening
My longhaul flight landed at Incheon airport around 5-6-ish pm on a Friday. After passing the immigration controls, I collected my KTX plus airport express ticket at the Incheon airport station. My ticket was booked on Movv, recommended by Visit Korea -

The journey to Onyang Hot springs was uneventful. I went to bed straight away after check in. There are a couple of similar hotels with hot springs in the city, so feel free to pick some others when you visit. .

Day 2: Hot springs visit, Onyang traditional market, Hyeonchungsa Shrine, Asan Ginkgo Tree Road, library
I began the day with a visit to the on premises hot springs -

Unlike hot springs hotels in Japan, hot springs visits are not inclusive of the stay. 7000 won is a reasonable charge for the visit anyway. Most visitors appear to be local residents, so I found my experience fairly authentic..

Onyang traditional market was quite vibrant on Saturday. You can find great produce of Korea, e.g. grapes and pears, sold at affordable price in the market. Plenty of restaurants are open for breakfast. If I remember correctly, this is a bowl of noodles in fish soup.

Following breakfast, I returned to the hotel to check out.
Strolling along a river
I found a river from Google map with an attractive street view. It is indeed a nice stroll. The local government seems to have done a good job in adding features to the river bank.

Asan Gokgyocheon Stream Ginkgo Trail led me to Hyeonchungsa Shrine. Back in the late 16th century, Japan, Korea and then Ming Empire (which ruled China) fought a fierce war in the Korean Peninsula. Yi Shun-sin was a significant military figure on the Korean side.
The Shrine and the memorial museum provided interesting perspectives about how Yi’s heritage is celebrated. My overall impression is that Yi Shun-sun is presented as an Admiral Lord Nelson of Korea. There are a lot of interactive exhibits seeking to re-enact the battles and Yi’s life.

If you have watched the recent Netflix hit Culinary Class Wars, you might recognise the guy as one of the 2 judges. Paik is a culinary tycoon. It is fun to come across his shops and products.

Before catching the KTX to reach Busan, I had an early dinner in a local restaurant. I found out from the local government website that this area is renowned for congee eel. This restaurant has a ‘reassuring’ shopfront. Loads of testimonials that it has been featured in Korean TV programmes.
