Leaving my curtains open interferes with the ship's navigation?

As I type this I'm on a Princess cruise ship somewhere near the Italian coast. I am in a balcony suite and this sign is by the sliding door. I get the part about strong winds, but how does leaving my curtains open at night interfere with the ship's navigation?

Can someone explain this please?

Maybe ask your steward? I’ll bet they get asked a lot.

Cruise Critic had a long discussion about this very subject a couple of years ago. This post explained both curtains and balcony doors:

"t's usually the forward facing Ocean-view staterooms or the rare forward-facing balcony staterooms that are below the bridge that must keep curtains closed at night. For side or aft-facing staterooms, you can open or close the curtains whenever you want.

Leaving a balcony door open for an extended period of time has a negative effect on the A/C system for multiple staterooms. If your neighbor tries to sleep with the balcony door open, their stateroom, your stateroom, and some of the nearby staterooms will feel the effect of higher room temperature, for ex.

If you want to go out on your balcony at night, that's no problem at all....unless you're sailing through a storm or are in an area that infested by pirates and the captain orders all balcony doors to remain closed/locked."
