Gibraltar - been there 3x. I like the place as do the kids. It is culturally interesting, compact and a fun place to spend a day. Nearly all tourists spend all their time in town. We also ride up to the top of the ridge and hike our way down enjoying the views and cave along the way.

Driving the Amalfi coast in high season. I’ve driven the coast in both directions in all seasons. Sure the high season traffic is heavy to say the least but, it’s the Amalfi coast and always beautiful. I’ve always been able to stop and park along the way.

Stonehenge - been there 3X too and always love it. Do it by yourself and not on a tour so you can spend a few hours and let the history soak in. DW loves it too. Lots of great places to explore nearby as well if you are driving.

We spent two nights/days in Gibraltar while on our honeymoon to Spain and really enjoyed our time there too. We did exactly what you did, basingstoke - rode up and hiked down, seeing the cave and siege tunnels. We’ve talked about going back. I loved our hotel there.

We also liked Madrid.

Not sure of the Fodors consensus, but we very much enjoyed Athens and Naples and I’d like to return to both of those cities. I’ve heard others say those are dirty, gross cities, but we loved roaming around both places on foot.

We love to walk and hike and so are able to put some distance between us and the crowds that make the following places intolerable to others.

Although, to be honest, you often don't have to walk far to distance yourselves from the crowds. They seem to congregate near the easiest access points, the touristy shops or the "must-see" sights. An exception to this rule is Atlantic City. I used to accompany my mom to the casinos and, needing a breath of fresh air, would walk the boardwalk or explore a few blocks off. Even more depressing!

Singapore - many here consider it sterile.

Visiting Switzerland over and over again, primarily for hiking. I never tire of the Alps or Swiss efficiency. And contrary to popular belief, it is possible to visit without spending a fortune.

I guess I like sterile and efficient.

No idea if I like Madrid yet. My trip there in March was scrubbed due to the Rona. Only saw the airport and the train station. I hope to find out in 2021.

Over the years, I've found I usually enjoy cities like those (let's just say "full of character") while the scrubby, polished ones that get raves sometimes leave me a bit bored.

I really enjoyed Budapest but I've read a lot of reviews of it being a disappointment after Vienna. Led me to think I probably wouldn't enjoy Vienna all that much.

Everyone said to fly into Siem Reap, see the temples and fly out again but we both liked Phnom Penh more than we expected

We so want to space a to Rota and go to Gibraltar before Spain yanks it back from the UK. I have the bus route mapped out and a hotel picked for the night. Basingstoke, they stopped our PE flights from Jax to Norfolk and now the runway is being closed at Norfolk for repairs so everything will be going out of BWI. Perfect for you. Oceana was our secret but am sure they will get overwhelmed with calls.

Dublin, I have friends there and they opened up things that tourist never see and we so appreciate. I love going and hanging in Stoneybatter with them or meeting our friends from Avoca.

Using pubic transportation=freedom to us.

I'm really sorry after reading this that we got off the ferry at Algeciras and hopped right on the train. We passed on visiting Gibraltar from the reviews (well, and not having a lot of time for a little Spain after 3 weeks in Morocco).

Clifton, you just named two more places I loved - Budapest and Phnom Penh. I want to spend a lot more time in PP. In my memory it’s kind of a magical place.

Florida, glad to hear someone else liked PP. So many reviews seemed to write it off. But for us, it wasn't even about what there was to "do". We went and sat on the quay and did nothing and still found that magic just hanging out with people who came over.

Clifton, we were in PP during Water Festival and one of my favorite memories is sitting on the balcony of a bar and just watching the crowds go by on the main street by the river.

Spent three days in Budapest with a private guide for one day, to see the places that were too far to walk to.

I too loved Phnom Penn, have friends there that took me to their home for dinner and really showed me around.

Bryce Canyon...how about Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley Capitol Reef National Park, ...Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument... Mesa Verde NP., etc

There is so much to see , which is driving distance from my home

Disneyland. Also Stonehenge. For two trips to London I 'poo pooed' it as just a pile of rocks. Last trip, a couple years ago, I decided I needed to see it and it really is an amazing place. I was just watching a program about it on NOVA and am so glad I saw it in person.
