I have a good friend who works in sales at Amelia Island Plantation--another resort.

He says the island is a fabulous place and loves getting to live there.

Although I've never stayed there, I hear that the Elizabeth Pointe is a nice place. Amelia is very laid back, and has lots of low, hurricane-bent oak trees, which gives it an un-beach look. The beach is wide, but not particularly beautiful since it doesn't have the white-white sand and blue-blue water of the west coast. For the best beach in the area, head down to Little Talbot Island, which is a state park, south of Amelia. For a little history, hear farther south to Kingsley Plantation. Also, head to Fernandina to see Fort Clinch -- a great, old fort right on the ocean. Kids love it. Also, visit the cute little shops in Fernandina and check out the (few) nice restaurants in downtown Fernandina. To indulge, do dinner, or lunch, at the Ritz. Amelia is a nice place to relax. They also have horseback riding on the beach. Have fun.

We stayed at Elizabeth Pointe Lodge about 6 years ago- our experience was very good. Our room was on the third floor overlooking the ocean, with a deep tub- perfect for soaking! Caswell-Massey toiletries and thick towels added to the experience. The breakfasts were very good, and I believe there was either wine or cookies served in the afternoon. We enjoyed using the bikes to explore the island, as well as walking down the beach with a beverage. Overall, one of the nicest B&Bs we've enjoyed- not too fancy or frou frou, just good service. Fernandina Beach has nice shopping in quaint storefronts, and some good restaurants. I'm blanking on our dinner place- it had a very good wine list.
Nearby Amelia Plantation has some restaurants as well- we went to a bar/pub restaurant over there to watch a sporting event on the big screen TV. All in all, a very relaxing experience.

I've never stayed there myself, but did stay at the Ritz two years ago. It is a quiet crowd..mostly retirees and no college age rowdies. THere is a good Italian rest. downtown..as well as a seafood rest. right there on the pier. We did go to Fort Clinch..and walked the beach. Many many sea shells. Bring a bag! Stopped at the light house. IF you have time, go down to Jacksonville. They have open air concerts during the year.

I'm going to Amelia Island in March. What is the dress there? I heard it is pretty laid back.. do people dress up for dinner/cocktails?

Thanks!

In Fernandina Beach the dress is very casual; in some of the tony resorts I would assume "resort chic" is more the rule. Nice place.

We could have written RB's response ourselves - we loved Amelia Island. Breakfasts were delicious and they did serve cookies and lemonade in the afternoon and wine and cheese and crackers in the early evening. Believe it or not, the Lodge and beach reminded us of our own Cape Cod! Fernandina is a quaint town - restaurants, shops, etc. You will enjoy it!
