Questions re. Seattle

My nephew and his wife are moving to Seattle next month, due to his job. They have visited Seattle before and really liked it there. I was wondering if anyone could give some advice or tips, useful info, etc.? They will be renting an apartment downtown for a while. They are in their mid-20's, very upbeat, and love to socialize.
Thanks for any advice!

I have lived in this city, or it's environs, since 1953...it's not for everyone. Lots of rain, and dark days, and worst traffic in the nation. Lots more people, same amount of roads. People here are a bit 'provincial' about getting modern. Real estate is expensive, and the woods and wild areas are nearly gone (Californians have been here, painted everything in sight, and pulled down all the trees and shrubs). Seriously, it's the rain--right now it is raining and blowing and I don't even want to walk to the mail box. If it were not for family connections, I would not choose this city.

Thanks, Melinda, for the websites to check out; and Jules, thanks for the input. I've never visited Seattle, so I really don't know a lot about it, although they liked it a lot when they visited.
kristen, he is with MCI in Atlanta, and is transferring to MCI in Seattle.

Jules, I got your message. I lived in WA for 15 years and would love to come back. First went there in 70's and you could see Rainier without smog. Then they started coming in from the south (CA) and it's amazing the damage done.
I still frequently visit as my gdaug lives up north of Seattle. Oh, I'm getting homesick...

Jules,

As a diehard Seattlite, I am sorry to hear that after living in Seattle since 1953, you're not happy there. It's interesting how everybody blames the Californians for Seattle's woes, except that it's true; only God can be blamed for all that rain! I lived in L.A. and got a first-hand glimpse of the damage all those Californians did there as a preview to what they did in Seattle. I think L.A. and California must have been nice once upon a time, but the attributes which made them so nice, also made them so popular. And so you know the rest of the story that follows for such popular places. That is what has become of Seattle. It's going through growing pains because it is popular for good reasons. As one example, picture in your mind of one of those clear, though maybe not often, days in Seattle. I for one cannot think that there are many other cities that can boast of a more beautiful and spectacular surrounding with the mountains and water in all directions.

I have to agree with Bestsy, that once you move away from Seattle you then are always left with that "homesick" feeling. You really can't appreciate it, until you are removed from it. I now am glad to be far removed from California, but am further away from Seattle, sadly, as I live overseas. If you were to move, you might be happy and never need to look back to Seattle. But many of us that used to live there, but do no more, appreciate what a great place it truly is, and especially once was. It has its faults like other cities, but it has a lot more going for it too. It is worth a visit just to see. Seattle is one of those places that a lot of peple visit, and end up departing with a feeling that they somehow want to come back and live there. Can that be said of very many cities? It's popularity is probably its worst enemy right now.

I bet most people in Seattle love it more than hate it, and prefer to live nowhere else. I know the traffic has gotten bad, but I can't believe it's now worse than L.A.'s. Think of the bright side, that if in the city you live rain is your worst complaint, then it's probably not that bad of a place after all.
I cannot help but think of myself as a Chinook salmon; that I will one day eventually migrate back to where I belong.

Louise

WA State is OK. My family and I moved here 3 yrs ago from Houston, Texas. We live in Olympia(an hour S of Seattle)and it's so boring! To slow pace, not much to see/do. I miss the warm sunny days. The cool rain dark days get old real fast! Seattle is a little faster. Traffic is not so bad, Houston traffic is much worse. We moved here for my husband's job. I'll take the hot humid weather over cool wet dark days. Hope to move in a few years.
