How Early to be at Maui Airport for Departure?
Hi! This is to anyone that has been to Maui in the last month or so. How early should we be to the airport for our departing flight? We will be coming back from Maui to LAX on Delta on a Wednesday at 10:30pm. I just read on another forum that it took 3 hours to check luggage and get to their gate. This was on 2/14/02 - said something about another threat was made toward the USA that was suppose to happen on 2/14. Anyone hear about this? Just the thought of standing in line for 2 to 3 hours with boys 8 and 10 make me shutter! It will feel like 1:30am (MST) when leaving at 10:30 pm
(Muai time). Thanks!

rg,
You should plan on getting to the airport 2-2.5 hours ahead of time, depending on if you have to return your rental car or not. Leaving HI for the mainland involves having your bags scanned through the agricultural screener, and then, if you get randomly selected, through the new x-ray machines. We flew back 2 days after the new x-ray machines started, and got selected. Not a big deal, just extra time. Also, airlines are now boarding much earlier and STOP boarding about 20 min. before the scheduled departure time, so you need to be at your gate early as well. The last warning I heard about was on 2/12, which maybe spilled into 2/14 with the airlines. Think of it this way, you'll have to have been out of your hotel room with your bags, so what else will you do at that time of night? Also, depending on how long you've been in Maui, your body clocks will have adjusted, and it will feel liek 10:30 in the airport.

RG,
I took the exact same Delta Flight to LAX less than a month ago. We got there 2-1/2 hours early. We could have gotten there 1 hour early and it would have been just fine. That was our experience. It was much more laid back there than in any other airport I've traveled through post 9/11.
