Flagstaff hotel vs Williams
We are planning to drive from Gallup, NM to the Grand Canyon and then stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Flagstaff on our way to Phoenix. From other posts I am seeing that the trains are a big problem in Flagstaff. Would it be better to find a hotel in Williams? How is the noise there?
What hotels do you recommend? We got the Hampton for $55 a night and thought it was a bargain. Thanks for your help.

Just thought I'd ask if anyone has stayed in the Amerisuites and if the noise is less there from the trains. I posted the prior message as we have reservations at the Hampton, but are willing to change. Still like Flagstaff as a location. Not many major brand hotels in Williams. What about the Holiday Inn? Would like a fun, restful night. I really don't want to hear trains all night.
Thanks for your help.

the same trains that run through flagstaff also run through williams i believe. i have stayed in flagstaff and have not had trouble with train noise. probably should avoid motels on old rte. 66. i loved flagstaff, nice college town, great san francisco mt. views, great big used book store in a shopping center on the south side of town surrounded by nice new motels. also a very good museum on the north side on the way to grand canyon.

Copied from another website:
"When visiting Flagstaff, consider hotel locations.
The railroad tracks run through the university and downtown areas. Hotel prices will reflect proximity to the tracks.
Approximately 85 trains come through per day, and each train blows its whistle at least 10 times. The first day, the train was charming. By the second day, all we did was glare."
We stayed at the Hampton Inn. Yes, you can hear the trains. On the bright side, the staff was very pleasant, it had an indoor pool and an elaborate complimentary breakfast.
The trains did keep me awake for awhile but I fell asleep about 1 a.m. I wish I had brought some ear plugs.
I don't think Williams is any better and the motel choices are fewer. Just bring your ear plugs and stay at the Hampton for a very good price.

Thanks for the advice. I called the Amerisuites in Flagstaff and they said they were three miles from the train tracks and had asolutely no noise from trains. I also found a manager's special for $59 a night and we have a two room suite with 2 dbl. beds and a pull out couch with a deluxe continental breakfast, so we will stay there. Thanks for the input.

Last year we stayed at a hotel in flag called (Ithink) Little America (found it in AAA bk)and it was very nice and inexpensive. Clean, breakfast was included, no train, just off of Rt 40 so very convenient to grand canyon and ruins/sites like painted desert etc. Would stay again.

good choice, mindy. i would suggest again a visit to the natural science museum on the north side of flag on way to g.c. wonderful displays, panoramas and history of the area and good gift shop. g.c. is not a long drive, so you would have time for a visit.
