GC Railway and Williams dining

We are traveling to the Grand Canyon in April with a 9 & 5 year old. We plan to stay at the Fray Marcos and ride the train to the GC. Is this a good choice for this age? Any other suggestions? What about dining in Williams, AZ? Thanks!

Can anyone help Anna? I'm interested as well. Have heard that the train is not very good but it sure sounds good in the brochures and online.

I have not ridden the train, but a lot of previous posters indicated that the ride was not particularly scenic and not a good value for the money or time spent.

I have not ridden the train, but have looked into it. I changed my mind when I read several postings that indicated that the ride was not particularly scenic and not a good value for the money or time spent.

I, too, gave consideration to the train. I was so glad I didn't reserve because when I did go the the Canyon and went through Williams, it seemed "bare-boned". I would not have wanted to have stayed in Williams.

train is a waste of time and $...don`t see a thing more than if you drive the highway....it just goes to the train station in the park and back....Williams is just a little nothing town...don`t think much of the hotels/motels or restaurants.....drive to the Grand canyon and stay the night.....

Anna - my kids loved the train... drinking coke out of the old fashioned glass bottles, looking out the windows and especially the hold-up when the cowboys boarded the train and we had to "stick-em up". Compared to a plain old ride in the car, it was more of an event for that age group...

I booked with the railroad the sr. package now I'm getting really doubtful of my choice. We don't usually do tours but I thought the drive and parking in The GC sounded like a hassle. Will be going in June and figure it will be very crowded. HATE CROWDS. Any suggestions?
