bugs in alaska

My wife and I are planning a trip to Alaska in August. I heard there are a lot of mosquitos during that time of year. Anyone had any trouble. We are planning on renting a RV in Anchorage for 1 week and then taking the cruise from Seward to Vancouver.

I was further north in Denali at the North Face Lodge (which is highlly recommended if you want to see animals and even more beautiful scenery. We didn't experience any bugs up there. Another year I rode (with Backroads) from Anch to Seward and there were no bugs in Aug. I think they are mainly June and July which is also the best birding season in Homer. The drive from Anch to Seward is long but beautiful. The museum in Anch is very good and so was lunch there. The anthropolgy museum, Queen Elizabeth Park, and the aquarium in Vanc are worth while. So is dining at the Fish House in Stanley Park and checking out Granville Island.
Have fun, bring binoculars for the cruise. I've been to Alaska 3 times and adore it, each time was in August.

We were in the Anchorage/Seward area for the first week of August. I don't remember any bugs. This included sitting on an open porch in a wooded area at dinner time when we stayed with friends. It was lovely to enjoy a drink while the salmon grilled. It was low 70s during our visit with only a little rain. Have a great trip. The drive to Seward is very beautiful.

We were 90 miles back in Denali the first few days of July this past summer. When hiking it was necessary to wear bug masks (like bee-keeper helmets). In addition I wore the strongest DEET I could get. Still the tiny little mosquitos were annoying. The same thing was true on Kenaii in the backcountry when hiking. Otherwise I was not really bothered by bugs at all. But once you walk through the tundra, they come up at you like black clouds. Again this was in July, maybe they are not as bad in August, and I would doubt that you'd have much problem either in Anchorage or on a cruise.

I've been in Alaska at the end of August twice fishing - once on the Kenai and once in the Iliamna area. I don't recall there being any bugs at all that time of year, though I understand things can be pretty bad earlier.

August is usually past the peak time for mosquitos but they're certainly around, although not bad in Anchorage or near salt water, like Seward. Inland, though, and especially near rivers and lakes, or any wet ground, they'll likely be a nuisance unless you use bug repellent. DEET is generally preferred, but it's whatever works for you. Come prepared as you would for any camping trip in the lower 48.
