Overnight parking in Munich

Is it possible to find overnight parking in Munich city center? I'm trying to debate whether to keep my rental car or turn it in when I get to Munich. We are 4 adults.

From Munich, we will:
- day trip out to Salzburg (30E one way = 240E round trip for 4)
- train back to Stuttgart (55E one way = 220E for 4)
These are with DB Bahn standard fare. (BTW, what's a "Saving Fares"?)

So clearly, a rental car fee will be cheaper ... except I don't know how difficult and expensive it is to find overnight parking while in Munich.

I'm looking to rent an apartment for 4-5 nights in the city center and I'm assuming that most apartments will not come with parking. So I have to look for overnight parking. I've read up on the Park & Ride but it seems that you can't park there overnight. Are there parking garage in Munich?

I'm considering apartment since I think that will be cheaper than 2 hotel double rooms, although hotel might provide parking.

Overnight garage parking could get expensive. One possibility might be to park outside of the immediate city center and simply take public transportation to the car. I know there are neighborhoods around the periphery with less expensive garage parking or possibly free street parking.

You should also carefully calculate and include gasoline expenses (in addition to the rental fee and parking fee). I'm certain you can trim those train fares through group tickets and/or advance fares. So it might not be as much of a no brainer as you think.

As you search for lodging, see what your options are there. I know of someone who stayed at a B&B which had a few spaces in a garage around 6 or 8 Euros a night, so it might not be so bad.

You'll spend a couple of hours driving each way between the two cities. Plus extra time in Salzburg itself, finding a place to park. Plus costs for fuel, rental and parking. I'd take the train, so that even the driver gets a chance to look at the scenery - it's a pretty journey. And no chance of getting caught up in Autobahn queues or the morning and evening rush hours.

On your day trip to Salzburg consider the Bayern Ticket. €29 for up to 5 adults to travel any time after 9 am. Your whole party can travel to and from Salzburg on one ticket. If you will be in Munich for a couple of days and you can save the two days of car rental, parking and the hassle you might well come out ahead.

Public transportation in Munich is great and if you stay in one of the dozens of hotels near the train station you will be very close to the pedestrian zone and most of the attractions. There is easy train access to Dachau if you are including that in your trip.

BTW to answer your question there are parking garages in Munich.

On hotels you could stay in a couple of rooms at the Uhland Hotel, near he Oktoberfest grounds. I think they have parking. I have also stayed at the Reinboldt hotel near the train station and I think they have a couple of parking spaces. Staying in hotels might be something to consider since they provide your breakfast. Consider @ €8 x4 adults x 5 mornings = €160. We normally have a big breakfast, stop for coffee and cake sometime in the middle of the day and then have dinner.

Don't pick up your car at a Train Station or airport in Germany. It adds a19% surtax to the bill.

Enjoy your trip to one of my favorite cities.

AisleSeat, thanks for the surprise info on Bayern tickets. How do I get them? All 4 of us adults can go to Salzburg for just 29E?! (I'm assuming that's just one way.) As noted in my original post, from the DB Bahn web site, "standard fare" is:

- day trip out to Salzburg (30E one way = 240E round trip for 4)
- train back to Stuttgart (55E one way = 220E for 4)

I don't see the Bayern tickets!

Are them similar offer for Stuttgart - Munich?

Very puzzle and interested now.

(Maybe I'll do some research or start another topic.)

Have you figured in the cost of fuel and parking in the decision to keep the car? Also, how many more days of rental fees will you be incurring by keeping the car?

As others have said, you do not need a car for any of the activities outlined. Munich has an excellent public transport system which is easy to use. Salzburg is only 1.5 hours away by rail.

You can get the 29€ Bayern Ticket (and other states in Germany) from either a machine at the train station or a ticket window. The ticket is for up to 5 adults traveling anywhere in the state after 9am. You can go to Salzburg from Munich (even though it is on the other side of the Austrian Border from Bavaria. The return trip is on the same ticket as long as you do it the same day.

On one trip my wife and I were traveling to Salzburg from Munich on a Byern Ticket. A woman asked if we had the Bayern ticket and if she could pay us 5€ to join our party. We let her join us but sice it was Christmas we wouldn't take her money. Before we got started out of the Munich train station we had a family. We had three others traveling with us on our ticket.

This is a good way for you to take other daytrips with your gang. Take a look at a map and see what else pops up that interests you. I have forgotten what states Stuttgart is in but you might find some interesting destinations around there.

Another thing you might enjoy. Every evening at 7 on the third floor of the Hofbrau Haus they have a cheesy but fun Bavarian Folk evening complete with slap dancing, chicken dance, wood chopper's dance, alp horn music, cowbell music and more. I don't know how much it is now but it used to be 6-7€ plus your beer. They also serve a buffet if you want to pay for it. We have restaurants we like better so we just have a beer and enjoy the show. It is a good idea to call ahead for reservations as it can fill up withntourist busses.

Have fun on your trip, raise a beer for the rest of us Fodorites.

Follow up to my own post in case this is helpful to others.

In the Maxvorstadt-Schwabing area, street parking is 6E max from 8a to 11p, free overnight and Sundays. So basically 6E for any 24hr period.

I rented this apartment: https://www.9flats.com/us/places/336...tment-muenchen. Right before we arrived, a parking space happened to open up right in front of the apartment. Our sweet host spotted it and literally stood on the spot and waved other drivers away while waiting for us (about 10 mins). God bless him! We didn't use the car the first 2 days so we just pay 6E for an all day ticket every morning. Not bad.

It was not hard to find this kind of parking spots in this area. Folks come and go quite a bit. I didn't see any parking garage.
