Stu, when we had the SF GTG recently some of us took the boat tour in the afternoon from Pier 43 1/2. There was a huge cruise ship berthed just s/e of Pier 43 1/2..probably at at Pier 41? If I recall correctly I think it was the Norweigan Cruise Line.

Columbus Motor Inn is a short walk to the piers at Fisherman's Wharf. I have stayed there in the past and several Fodors just stayed there a couple of weeks ago for our SF GTG. Rates run from $77 to $145 for a King. Rooms seem to be recently remodeled. I would make your reservation (cancellable) soon as this hotel is very popular and books up way in advance.

It's also an easy walk to North Beach (Little Italy) which is a good spot for dinner. Several bus lines run right in front of the hotel and the cable car turn around is right around the corner.

LoveItaly-Yes I think that was Norweigan Cruise Line.

The San Francisco cruise ship terminal is currently at Pier 35. There is talk/action? of building an extended cruise ship terminal that will emcompass Piers 27-31.

Any Fisherman's Wharf hotel will be fine. you will have to take a taxi however to get your luggage on board ship.

Have you ever used Priceline? It'll give you very good prices on FW hotels.

I agree about using Priceline - or Hotwire. We got a great Fisherman's Wharf hotel (popular chain) for peak time in September for about $85 inclusive of all taxes and charges. This was through Hotwire and our friend recently got the same one for next March. Give it a go.

Another vote for Columbus Motor Inn, if you aren't comfy with Priceline, etc. We thought it a great value, very clean, excellent location.

Another vote for Columbus Motor Inn. Stayed in August and it was great, also free parking. Don't judge the book by the cover though. Outside I was a little leary, but once inside it was awesome. Big rooms, beautiful furniture and flat-screen TV. I know you will enjoy your stay.

Since your cruise is in July which is tourist time in SF, I would go ahead now and make a cancellable reservation at Columbus Motor Inn. You really won't beat their rate in the summer time. Then when it gets close to cruise time, you can try Priceline and see what you get.

Having been invited to the Columbus Inn by two of the gals that were at our Oct. 24 GTG I was amazed how nice the rooms were. And the location was wonderful. Linet, imo Paula has a good idea, reserve there (check their cancellation policy) and at least you will know that you for sure have a good hotel room which is just up Columbus from Fisherman's Wharf. BTW, staying at the Columbus Inn for two nights will put you right in the area where there are great restaurants many with outdoor cafes and fun places to check out.
