Lake District to London stopover
This June my husband and I will be walking the Dales Way in England. We're relatively fit, enjoy gardens, museums, history and a good dinner at the end of the day. We will spend a few days in London, then take a train to York for a few days before the walk. The walk begins in Ilkley and ends in Windermere. We'd like to spend a few days somewhere on the way back to London and our flight home out of Heathrow. We do not want to rent a car. We have ruled out staying in the Lake District, as well as continuing on to Scotland. We're looking for suggestions for an interesting town/city that would not require more than one transfer. We're open to bus or train travel. Thank you in advance for any input.

I'd maybe consider Oxford - interesting itself as well as a good hub for visiting other areas like the Cotswolds (trains to Moreton-in-Marsh and/or bus to places like Woodstock/Blenheim), and very easy via an express coach right to the terminals at LHR (or trains into London if you want spend some more time in the city before flying home). But it would require at least two train changes from Windermere.

I would recommend Chester, Oxford, or Bath if you are finishing in Windermere and don't want to rent a car. Each town is small enough to explore on foot, and they are all easily accessible by train with just one change. Bath has the Roman Baths and picturesque streets, Oxford has colleges and the Ashmolean Museum, and Chester has city walls and a cathedral.
All three towns are great places to relax for a few days before heading back to London. You’ll find good places to eat and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s easy to enjoy the local culture, gardens, and history without the stress of travel.

Just checked and Ludlow is 2 changes I think.
Also 2 changes but very undertouristed in this area:

We used to visit Loughborough a lot as our son studied there for a couple of years. It is a small town, was a bit tatty tbh, but is a good base for some lovely countryside and things to do.

You can get to Ludlow with one change - Northern train Windermere to Manchester Piccadilly and then Transport for Wales train to Ludlow. This journey would however probably be quicker going Windermere-Oxenholme-Crewe-Ludlow, two changes.
Another possibility would be Lancaster. Direct train from Windermere and then another direct train to London.
So far we have given you small city and town options but there are two obvious large city options with plenty to engage the tourist. Manchester has a direct train and you could do Liverpool with one change.

Thank you to all for your informative responses including information on train connections. There is certainly enough food for thought in what you have suggested! We will make some decisions in the next few days. Stay tuned for a trip report in July, hopefully!
