North Macedonia- hiking, wine, car rental on 10 days trip

Hello, I am trying to find not very hot and affordable place for my future visits of Balkans. It will be my first visit to Macedonia in the middle of June. One of the reasons is to try local food, wine and fresh fruit and vegies. Is it safe to rent car and avoid some scams? Where is better to rent car in the Skopje airport or in the city? Also I am seeking recommendations for hiking bases and trail heads that I can reach on regular car (not SUV) without risk of damaging it. So far I am thinking to stays in Skopje for 3 nights in order to explore the city and hike in Matka canyon. After this may I likeky stay in Mavrovo for relaxing, enjoying more cooler temperatures and hiking if I can find any decent trails with views. Next part of the trip is still in question. Ohrid, Shar, Bitola, Tetovo? I am not interested in the hiking for the sake of hiking, I am looking for panoramas, open spaces with good views, but not on long walk in forest in order to reach some mediocre waterfall or cave.
So far my experience in this area include Bulgaria (Bansko, Sofia, Plovdiv), Croatia, Slovenia and Kotor Bay Montenegro. Thank you in advance for honest recommendations.

Hi! Macedonia is a great choice. Ohrid and Mavrovo are perfect for what you’re looking for – nice views and cooler weather. Renting a car is safe and common, and I’d recommend renting at the airport as it’s usually easier and more convenient. Matka Canyon is also worth visiting. Very safe country, you’ll enjoy it.
