Anyone been to any of the movie set locations of Mamma Mia? Was it worth it? If so, which ones would you recommend? Just your top 3 please. Cheers

No not worth it. The scenes for Mamma Mia could be shot in a thousand (beautiful) places in Greece and you wouldn’t know the difference.

Interestingly enough, when we lived overseas, part of having your children participate in extracurricular activities at the international school meant that we had to "house" students when they visited for tournaments, meets, and so forth. (In turn, our students were "housed" when they traveled to other schools.) One of the "housers" staying with us had grandparents living in Skopelos, the main island setting for Mama Mia; and his grandmother was one of the many local extras hired for the movie. Our houser said Skopelos is a beautiful island.

You don't even bother to say which Mamma Mia, as there is more than one.

Why don't you list the locations you are considering? As a non-fan, I didn't realize there was that many.

Are you asking because you are a big fan of the movie? Or do you just want to go because it looked gorgeous in the movie?

A Doc Martin fan might ask 'Is it worth going to Port Isaac?" In which case only another Doc Martin fan could truly answer the question.

I completely understand seeing a place in a movie and wanting to go there. The first time I went to Salzburg was because I loved The Sound of Music.

I did a quick Google search and there are Mamma Mia tours of the island. Having not been to that island, I don't know which to recommend. I'm sure they're all good, and you'll get some insight from a local.

Thanks for confirming that there is more than one Mamma Mia movie. It's called a sequel. Just like there is more than one Star Wars movie, even if they have different tag lines.

Going on a group tour to the Mamma Mia sites would indeed be very convenient, and perhaps the OP would enjoy the company of other like-minded travelers. But 30 or so people disgorging from a bus at an otherwise tranquil spot will not have the same effect as getting to a remote spot before the busses do. I am specifically thinking about the Chapel of St John and Amarandos Cove. So it depends what kind of experience the OP is looking for.

My wife is a huge fan and in a way I am too. The chapel on the cliff, the beach, and the house stand out for us. Perhaps, there could be others. I do understand that there will be other places in Greece that are as beautiful and even better. The house may not be there anymore though.

Yes and the sequel has a different name. So if someone mentioned ‘Mamma Mia’ I would know exactly what movie they were talking about and I might say that I love that movie and have seen it numerous times. I would not think that they were talking about ‘Mamma Mia! Here we go again’ as it has a different name. I can see your point but your response was still very snarky, for example ‘you don’t even bother… and ‘why don’t you…

I am so glad you know exactly what the OP was talking about. I didn't because I know there are two Mamma Mia movies, and it could be that he was interested in the locations for both movies.

Let me help you. This is not from my own experience, but from people I met who did the “Mamma Mia footsteps” trip.

First of all: everybody thinks Mamma Mia was shot in Santorini. NO!
And yes, Greece has so many wonderful places that can look even better than the scenes — but that’s another topic. Like France has more than Paris, Spain has more than Barcelona (Madrid, Alhambra, Seville)… ok ok ok, we know it 😄

jrodion asked a simple thing: top locations of Mamma Mia. So here it is:

The first movie was shot in Skopelos and Skiathos. So most of the movie locations you remember from the first film are there. You can google the exact spots — that’s the easy part. I do not agree with dreamon as both Skopelos and Skiathos are wonderful islands.

These girls I was telling you about did:
Athens → flight to Skiathos → ferry to Skopelos → back to Skiathos → flight to Athens.

They also did Santorini, where I met them, and stayed 2–3 nights for the Instagram places. And they also watched Mamma Mia at the Volcan on the Rocks open-air cinema (yes it is played daily!) because the Kamari open cinema was playing another movie. So I hope this answers your question.

As for the sequel, it wasn’t shot in Greece. I’ve also heard #3 might start filming in Greece again. And if you’re into movie-spotting in Greece in general, I’ve seen reports of Brad Pitt in Hydra NOW, and don’t forget Odyssey, which was shot last year in the Peloponnese (same area where Maria Callas was filmed a couple years before with Angelina Jolie).
