Best Island for Xmas 2026 for family of 8

Hi all, My husband and I want to treat my family (3 grown daughters, 3 son-in-laws, 1 pre-schooler granddaughter) to a family beach vacation December 2026, right after Xmas. I want to rent a home to make it affordable plus we're all cooks and that would be fun and value-conscious as well. Looking for, in order of priority:
* Lovely beaches, preferably with beachfront or easy beach access.
* A safe island without having to be behind gates in an all-inclusive.
* A pool.
* A reasonable inventory of big rental houses to pick from.
* A direct flight from NYC.
* Things to do beyond beach like snorkeling or some local restaurants are a plus, too.

So far, I *think* I've come up with Barbados, Grenada, Turks Caicos, the Bahamas as best options. Am I right? Am I missing something? Any other hints you might have (like, specific areas to rent) would be greatly appreciated!

If traveling in December or January you might want to strike the Bahamas off your list as that island chain is fairly far north (it's in the Atlantic not the Caribbean) and it could be a bit cool at that time of the year, especially if you visit one of the more northern islands in the chain. the Turks & Caicos is a bit further south but you could still run the risk of it being cool in Late December or early January. After reading the info below if you do decide on the Turks & caicos your best bet would be to look for rental villas on the Island of Providenciales.

Another thing to consider is the weeks right after Christmas into early January s the peak of "High Season" in the Caribbean so you can expect to encounter the highest rental rates of the year. You are wise to begin talking your plans for 2026 now as many rental villas (as well as resorts & hotels) for that time are booked a year in advance.

Now for some useful info:

Just about any island from Puerto Rico south that you can reach non-stop from NYC area airports will have everything on your wish list including large villas with a pool that can accommodate your size group. you mentioned you wanted a "big house" so keep in mind that on no matter which island you choose, the bigger the house the more it will cost. The location of the rental unit will also govern the price, beachfront properties are usually more costly that beach access properties and more that properties that are further inland. Properties with better views generally command higher rents than those with limited or no views. Like everything in real estate, it comes down to location, location & location.

St. Thomas and St. Croix can be reach non-stop from NYC. Those islander safe and both offer very nice beaches, good to very good snorkeling, an excellent variety of restaurants and plenty of real villas in varying price ranges. Grenada could be a good choice but, if I'm not mistaken, Jet Blue (from JFK) is the only airline that flies there non-stop so you may have difficulty finding a suitable flight. Antigua would be another good choice as it ticks off everything on your wish list. St. Lucia is another island you should consider with the caveat that it is a larger very mountainous island with many things fairly spread out and the terrain makes driving the narrow twisty roads a bit challenging. If you are willing to forego the non-stop flight and take either a connecting flight, water taxi or ferry ride to reach your final destination consider St, John in the US Virgin Islands, either Tortola or Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Island or the Islands of Anguilla or St. Barts. St. Martin/Sint Maarten (both French & Dutch) is another island you can reach non-stop from NYC . Because it has both a French side and Dutch side it's like visiting two islands at the same time. It came be quite crowded, especially around Christmas, and there can be a bit of a petty crime problem on the French side so it might not be a best choice if "safety" is a major concern for you. On the plus side there is a very large inventory of rental villas on the island.

hope tis helps with your decision making.

Sounds like a wonderful trip you’re planning. St. John in the US Virgin Islands could be another good choice. It is safe, has beautiful beaches, and lots of villas with pools. In Barbados, try the west coast near Holetown for nice rentals and good local restaurants.

Grand Cayman is another island that can be reached non-stop from NYC. It’s a very safe destination, has beautiful white sand beaches, good snorkeling and plenty of large rental villas, perfect for families.
