Quick trip from London to Liverpool and back to Heathrow

We have a 2 day stop over in London. Husband is dying to visit Liverpool, so the plan is to spend one day in London around the Cecil Court etc area and the second day in Liverpool. Getting back to Heathrow from Liverpool.
whats the easiest and the fastest way to get to Liverpool from London and then from Liverpool to Heathrow.
Thanks!

Not at all practical, and near impossible. Flying is 2-1/2 hours, with all the airport hassle. Train is 3 hr. 37 minutes....almost 8 hours travel in one day. Even hiring a private car is over 3 hours. If hubby is obsessed I say forget London altogether and try to do only Liverpool, although again, it just seems near impossible.

A car London to Liverpool in 3 hours (hilarious). Seriously don't try this.

Could you fly into Manchester?

Can you extend your stopover - 3 days, or 4?

Oof
we have 2 days
Thinking— one day in London— train to Liverpool the same day, stay the night.
next day -Liverpool for a few hours
at 2:30 get the train back to Heathrow
is this unreasonable?

Assuming this is a Beatles-driven quest. So close ..yet so far. Of course, it can be done. Whether it should be is another question. When I was young and crazy I may have given it a try. Just be aware of the time and hassle involved. It will make for great stories later. Good luck let us know how it went.

I would never risk a long train journey like that on the day of a flight out. One hitch along the way and you are done for. You have to make at least one change along the way to get to Heathrow.
Even if you went straight to Liverpool and skipped London it is a dodgy thing to do.

And seriously is it worth the expense (and the stress) for a couple of hours?

YES!

There is no train from Liverpool to Heathrow. You would need to take the train into central London (Euston Station) and then a convoluted tube (slow) or tube / Elizabeth (a bit faster but still a hassle) Line trip from Euston to LHR, or a car service/taxi (slow, expensive, no hassle)

This is simply not a feasible plan in any way. Plus being in Liverpool the morning of a flight out of LHR is beyond foolhardy (meant in the nicest possible way )

I assume the hubby is interested in Beatles sites - right?? If so they are spread all over the city and not right next to the train station. 2 hrs in the city would give you nothing much. Stick to London - the Abbey Road zebra crossing, Studios and maybe Montague Square/blue plaque

If this obsession isn't Beatles-related, ignore the above

What time do you arrive in London on day 1? IF it's very early, maybe you get up to Liverpool that day?

Possible but not very practical. The fastest way to get from LHR to Liverpool would be to fly to MAN and take a train from there - about 2.5 hours in total. Leaving at least 2 hours between arrival at LHR and flight up to MAN means 4.5 to 5 hours just getting to Liverpool.

As a person who has done the mad scramble TO Liverpool from Heathrow via Tube and train--but NOT the mad scramble back--you could book a hire car straight from Heathrow to Liverpool. That part just might be doable. I emphasize "might".

But trying to include time in London AND navigate back to and through Heathrow for your next flight just won't work.

I feel bad. I LOVE Liverpool.

Only hire a car to get to Liverpool if you are not coming from a long haul flight, otherwise save the city for a longer stay when you can really enjoy it.
As I said before apart from anything else I don't think the expense and stress is worth it for a couple of hours.

heti: I think (sure hope so) AlessandraZoe meant hire a car AND driver from LHR to Liverpool. That would be barely marginally doable but cost pretty much the same as transatlantic airfare

TZC: Good decision. Next rime consider flying in to MAN (or even GLA) and concentrate on the north of England. Liverpool, the Lake District, the Peak District, York/the Dales, Hadrian's Wall -- just sooooooo much to see and do -- of course one would need more than 2 measly days

yep, Janisj--meant chauffeured car!

TZC--So happy you decided not to try it on this trip. And do come back to do Liverpool when you have time.
We could have easily spent five days in Liverpool without stepping outside the city, but our three measly days still worked out rather well.

There is plenty of Beatle stuff to find in London.

This should inspire:
