Spring 2026 Greece Itinerary - Feedback Welcome

I am looking at a 2.5-3 week trip to Greece next April/May. I've done a bunch of research and put together an itinerary that includes the places I most want to see, but I am open to feedback. A couple of notes:

I know that the going advice is to fly into Athens, fly to an island that same day, and then spend time in Athens before flying out at the end of a trip. I agree that this is the most efficient way to craft an itinerary, but I'd rather do Athens at the beginning, when I have the most energy, and save the island portion, which will be more relaxed and low key, for the end of the trip.

Naxos is highly recommended by many on this forum; however, for some reason, in all of the videos I've watched and trip reports I've read, Paros and the Peloponnese are calling more strongly to me. If I had more time, I'd add Naxos to the itinerary.

I love history and Greek mythology, but I'm a little worried I'll find archeological sites boring. Are there any recommendations for tour guides or tours that really make sites like Delphi, Mycenae, the Acropolis come alive?

Days 0-2 Travel, early morning arrival in Athens, low key recovery day, overnight Athens
Day 3 - Drive to Nafplio
Day 4 - Nafplio
Day 5 - Mystras (Nafplio)
Day 6 - Mani Peninsula (Nafplio)
Day 7 - Mycenae (night Nafplio)
Day 8 - Travel to Athens (Athens)
Day 9-12 - Athens
Day 13 - Mid-day travel to Delphi (Delphi)
Day 14 - morning Delphi, afternoon Meteora (Kalambaka/Kastraki)
Day 15 - Meteora (Kalambaka/Kastraki)
Day 16 - Drive to Athens airport, drop off car, fly to Paros (Paros)
Days 17-20 Paros, daytrip to Antiparos
Day 21 - Travel to Athens (airport hotel)
Day 22 - Depart

I would encourage you to put all your time in Athens at the very start of your trip. For one thing, that will save a change in hotels. For another, if you will be crossing multiple time zones, you won’t be safe to drive for at least 36 hours – safe for yourself or for anyone else on the roads. So: Arrive in Athens, visit that city, pick up your rental car, go to Nafplio, drive to Delphi / Meteora (bonus: no need to deal with a car while in Athens and no need to drive through that city en route!), return car, fly to Paros….

If it helps, here’s my TR:
With Gratitude for a Glorious Solo Month in Greece

Should be a great trip -- enjoy!

I do have a recommendation for the Acropolis. We arrived a day before our group tour of Athens began. I made reservations in advance (a must) for a late afternoon entry. We downloaded a Rick Steve audio guide. That was fine for us since we knew we would return then next morning with our group tour but there are other guide apps out there.

The site was not too crowded and we were able to roam around and return to things of interest and take pictures. It was not too hot and the light was beautiful. When we returned the next morning with the tour (around 10) it was unpleasantly crowded and hot.

I agree about putting Athens at the start of your trip.

For Meteora we loved our stay at Hotel Douipiani. They have a lovely garden where we enjoyed drinks and breakfast while viewing the monoliths.

kja mama_mia Good idea to put all my time in Athens right at the beginning. I had originally thought to break up the two driving portions to keep the drives on the shorter side. I've driven internationally a couple times before, but this would be my first time driving on a solo trip. But if I do the Peloponnese first, I'll have several days to get comfortable with driving before doing the longer leg between Nafplio and Delphi.

I had also thought about doing two days at the Acropolis - one with a guide and one on my own, although I would probably do the guided tour first and then come back and spent more time on my own.

Thanks for the hotel recommendation mama_mia !

To add to what others have said….

For me, the Mani would be too far for a day trip from Nafplio.

I prefer to take ferries to the islands rather than fly.

Unless you have an early flight home I would stay in the city rather than at the airport.

I’m sure you’ll have a fabulous time.

If you want to visit the Mani Peninsula, you may want to consider overnighting there and visiting Mystras on the way. Staying on the Mani would make a long drive from Mani up to Delphi; you could break it up with an overnight in Corinth as the ruins there are worth seeing. Otherwise, I agree that Mani is too long from Nafplion and you may want to omit. Epidaurus is also worth visiting from Nafplion.

dreamon You're right, the Mani is quite a drive for a day trip.

Alternative option 1: I could drive from Athens to the Mani and stay there a couple of nights, then move on to Nafplio for another few nights before moving on to Delphi. This would allow me to explore the Mani peninsula in a more leisurely fashion. The downsides are that I would be doing a longer drive on my first day of driving in Greece. It would also require me to move hotels once more than I had originally planned.

Alternative option 2: Remove the Mani peninsula from my plans and spend that day exploring another part of the Peloponnese. Suggestions for a good day trip from Nafplio that I don't already have on my itinerary?

Alternative option 3: Ditch the Peloponnese all together and spend that time in Naxos. I said above that as I've done my research Naxos hasn't called to me as much as the Peloponnese, but I haven't completely ruled it out. For people who have been to both, did you enjoy one significantly more than the other?

Naxos and the Peloponnese are so different that I hesitate to compare them, but if I had to go to only one, I’d opt for the Peloponnese because I’m a great fan of archeological ruins. Naxos has some, of course, but not nearly so many as the Peloponnese. And from my perspective, if you add the time you are currently allocating to the Peloponnese to Naxos your trip would center too much on the islands. JMO, of course.

I’m glad I saw a bit of the Mani peninsula, but of the places you’ve listed as possible “skips,” that would be my choice. If you’re looking for a different day trip from Napflio, consider Messene.

OR option 4: Skip the day trip to the Mani Peninsula and add a night to your time in Delphi & Meteora. I took the better part of a day exploring Delphi and its glorious museum and the better part of a day in Metoera.

I hope that helps!

Absolutely agree with including Peloponnese and it makes me so happy to see it! If you have time to also visit Ancient Olympia it is stunning this time of the year! Maybe it's a better idea to start from Mani (the south) and move your way up to the north again, I agree with this idea. It's not that far anyway. You'll be by car right? But in general don't skip the Peloponnese it has such an amazing beauty!!

I see your challenge as being that you want to visit Delphi/Meteora, Peloponnese and Paros, which are all in entirely different directions. If you want to stay in Athens on arrival, then it becomes a challenge to achieve that without three stays in Athens. If you drive from Meteora to Athens airport, it's a long drive and you may be feeling the pressure of the deadline of getting to your flight on time - sounds like a long, boring and stressful day.

One alternative, with the things you want to do and if you want to avoid three stays in Athens (and assuming you have 21 nights) then one possibility might be:
- travel by bus on arrival to Nafplio (you can't get into your hotel anyway if you arrive early in the morning)
- Nafplio (5nights) hire a car in Nafplio on day 2 or 3, explore in and around Nafplio, maybe day trip to Mystras or elsewhere
- Delphi (1night)
- Meteora (2nights) return the car in Athens
- Athens (3nights)
- Paros (4nights) by ferry
- Naxos (4nights) by ferry
- Athens (2nights) by ferry

That's the same number of stops I think to what you had originally and of course you could play with the number of nights in each place. If the Mani is more important than Meteora, swap them? Unfortunately, that leaves out the Mani but it's hard to see everywhere when the places are quite a distance apart. To be honest, I'd probably include more of the Peloponnese and skip Delphi and Meteora. btw Delphi and Meteora are reachable using public transport but connections between the two are infrequent.

My apologies if others have said the same thing as I’m skimming the posts, but the one thing that really stuck out for me was driving from Meteora to the Athens airport. That is a long drive and I’d be worried about taking a flight on the same day I’d leave Meteora.

Of all the places we visited on our trip in the spring of 2024, the Mani was the place we could’ve dropped. While we enjoyed our time there, it was one place that I could’ve skipped and not feel like I missed something important.

I loved the Peloponnesus and wouldn’t drop a visit there for Naxos. So much to see and our 6 days there was barely enough. Really, the history is amazing and Nafplio is a beautiful and charming town.

We also loved Mystras, and I see dreamon suggests it for a day trip from Nafplio. It was one of our favorite places (after Mycenae and Epidavros).

We loved Meteora (and though my husband got sick, he was still glad we went) and the trek there is worth it.

You probably saw my TR but here it is if you want to check it out:

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions. There are two suggestions to drop the Mani Peninsula, which I was totally ready to do, and then I came across this gorgeous boutique hotel in an olive grove that looks so beautiful and perfect for a relaxing, low-key couple of days. Now cutting that part of my itinerary is going to be extra difficult!

I may rethink my decision not to do Paros first. The flight into Athens that I'm most likely to take lands at 7am, so that would make it really easy to catch a flight to Paros that same day. Then I could do the trip backwards: Paros -> drive to Meteora (long but minus the arrival time pressure) -> Delphi -> Nafplio -> possibly keep Mani in for a relaxing couple of days at the olive grove property -> finish off in Athens. However, another of my reasons for leaving the island until the end of the trip is that temperatures will likely get a bit warmer over the three weeks. Originally I was thinking late April-mid May, but now I'm considering using more points to go early-mid May - either way, I'll have warmer weather in Paros if I leave it to the end of the trip.

Decisions, decisions!

Look into options for putting all these flights on the same ticket. That way, if there's a problem, it will be up to the airline to get you to Paros if anything goes wrong.

If you keep Paros at the beginning of the trip (I would), you could do Paros>Athens>Meteora>Delphi>Nafplio. It’s possible to get to the airport from Nafplio without too much difficulty (unless you have a very early flight). I just don’t like extremely long or very convoluted travel days, like Paros>Meteora.

Is it possible to add more time? We’ve done trips to Greece which involved multiple stays in Athens and each time we returned there it seemed more familiar and more enjoyable.

Other than that, all I can say is that I’m yet to have a holiday where there weren’t places I had to forgo.

btw the Mani is a fairly big area and could easily involve swimming.

dreamon I feel lucky that I can get three weeks off work (assuming my boss approves my request!), so no, adding more time to the trip isn’t really feasible.

A couple more questions for the group:

Recommended town(s) to stay in on Paros

Recommended neighborhood to stay in in Athens

Instead of staying in a countryside boutique hotel on the Mani Peninsula, does anyone have suggestions for a similar type of property either near Delphi or Meteora or as a stop between Delphi and the Peloponnese? I’d like to have that same rest-day experience in a location that works better with my itinerary. Budget would be about $150/night (which may seem low but the property I was looking at was around $100/night, so I think it’s doable). I don’t necessarily need luxury, just a property with picturesque grounds where it would be nice to spend a day sitting outside and reading.

In Meteora, I stayed at Pyrgos Adrachti, which still gets great reviews. It has a lovely garden with wonderful views and very helpful staff. I don't know if it would suit your interests or budget, but you can check that.

In Athens, I stayed near
Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, which seemed perfect for my interests -- close to several places I wanted to see in Athens. I loved the view of the Acropolis from my hotel, but unfortunately, I can't recommend that hotel itself (the Acropolis View). Maybe you can study maps to see what's nearby.

I didn't know whether you were working or retired but regardless we all have time limits. Whenever I travel, I'm always struggling to fit in everything I want to do and see.

In Athens, I would stay in the Plaka or one of the suburbs abutting it. It's a touristy area but lots of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and tourist sights within easy walking distance. Kolonaki is also nice and more upmarket. This site may be useful https://www.thisisathens.org/neighbourhoods We love Athens and never mind having extra time there - but some people are less enamoured, preferring cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, etc.

I don't know of any suitable country hotels but looking near Delphi, Arachova, Kastraki, etc, makes sense. If you have sufficient time, somewhere in/near Dimitsana may also appeal, especially if you enjoy hiking, and then you could head to Patras and onwards to Delphi. Also, we stayed in the township of Mystras and I believe there may be some possibilities near there, as I believe you may be heading to Mystras.

I will be interested to hear what your plan ends up looking like. All the places you've chosen are wonderful places to visit.

Looks like a solid plan. Doing Athens first makes sense if you want energy for museums and ruins. Paros at the end will be a nice slow-down.
