We're heading to Basque Country, both French and Spanish, the second week of June 2026 for 12 days. There's so little mention of music on the various trip reports for Basque Country other than dancing on the square in Bilbao on Saturday nights. I've had some luck on finding a few YouTube videos, but we would love to hear live performances, especially NOT in a typical concert hall setting. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Unless there are any festivals in any of the towns you´re visiting, it will not be easy to find. If you´re lucky to be here on June 23 at night, St John´s and the summer solstice, it´s hugely celebrated with bonfires at night (they start around 1030pm and last until early hours in the morning) with dancing and music.

I am grateful you chimed in--I had figured you would know more than anyone else would. As luck would have it, that's the morning we are leaving town. But I thank you so much for responding. I'll pump you for more information about other things in the coming months.

PS I find it to be ironic that I could find American Bluegrass and Irish Trad but saw NOTHING for Basque music, even though I do know it exists. Oh well.

Check for "bertsolari" (BERTSOLARI) videos on Google, it´s a unique "improvised verse singing contest" unique to the Basque Country, there´s a national championship (here we call "national" when it refers to the Basque Country ). Bertsolari txapelketa nagusia, in Basque. There are also provincial championships (or contests), with many followers here. It´s like a "verse" competition, but sung.

Also, check for "txistu", this three-hole flute is unique to this area. And there´s dancing and singing in Bilbao but on Sunday evenings, and all along the morning on Saturdays and Sundays, quite improvised and not as a tourist attraction (in fact, they normally do it away from the main touristy places).

Trikitixa and Alboka are other two traditional Basque instruments still very popular in celebrations...I just can´t stand them for more than two minutes!!

Fete de la Musique is June 21st, every year. I would check to see what special is going on where you will be. There will surely be something. Though in your OP I think you said second week of June.....

I've had temporary planning insanity--I knew about that festival in French Basque Country in my original research, but because I had intended on doing the trip earlier in June, I just wiped it off my mental calendar. Now our later trip dates COULD align, but darn it, I'm flying OUT of Basque Country via Bilbao (thought I'd save the best for last), the wrong end, during that time. Could a, would a, should a.

Yep, I'll find something. I know we'll get enough good food, great architecture, superb history, and fabulous art, so hey, that might be enough for the husband, especially since I've found some Basque IPAs for him to try.

On the french side (just because I know it much better), it should not be difficult to attend a choir performance, usually in a church. Basques are very good at singing. If you are not up for a concert, there are sometimes people singing at Bayonne's market on market day (saturday). Or go to Jean Dauger, the rugby stadium (but in June I think there are no games).
in Biarritz, on Sunday morning, there is the mutxiko (people dancing) in front of the casino. I dont know if it is all year long. Tourist office should be able to tell.
On St John's day, same as on the spanish side, there are bonfires with music and dancing. For sure, there is one in Anglet near La Barre.
