Help with route Antibes to Tuscany

Hi folks,

we are heading to Tuscany around the Vietebro region form Antibes france.

what would the drive be like from ventimiglia to there? If we rented a car? Is it a stressful drive or what are the roads like?

or would a train be better the whole way?

Do you mean Vitebro as I think Vietebro is in Romania?
When were you planning this trip? If from now until the end of August, it might be busy

You might want to ask the moderators to add some detail to you title and/or at least tag the thread for Italy.

I consider the highway driving along the mountainous coast once you enter Italy to be the most stressful driving in Europe. Lots of motorcyclists driving at very high speeds weaving from lane to lane.

I assume if you drive you are getting the car in Italy? Otherwise you will pay a very high cross border drop off fee.

IMHO the only issue with the autostrada from the French border is you won't be able to admire the views. I've never found it a difficult drive. Remember it's an autostrada. 130km/h speed limit.

I guess it'll depend on what sort of traffic you're used to

The correct spelling (and pronunciation) is Viterbo. It isn't in Tuscany but in Lazio.

In Europe we use divided highways to drive long distances, so there aren't many reasons to be stressed. Unless one is afraid of tunnels or can't pick the right lane at the toll booths.

Expect traffic and slowdowns near Genoa. In summer I'd rather take a train at Ventimiglia and get the rental car in La Spezia.

The A1 motorway exit closest to Viterbo is called Orte-Viterbo and it's 20 minutes away from the town center.

OP, that is quite a distance between the two points. Without any plans (or known plans) to stop along this distance, it would mean a long day and a large expense. I wouldn't rent a car with a one way fee for this, especially from France.

Is this the same trip you've been planning since this past winter? Are you in Europe currently?

Honestly, fly from Nice to Rome if Vitrebo is a must-see. Normally, any time a flight has to be added, it means you are moving too much or have convoluted goals - which we advised you in past threads.

Rome2rio still remains a valuable general resource.

Good luck.

I've only driven parts of this route, not the entire distance at once. I see the fastest routing is from Ventiglia on the major highway until turning inland at Viaregioo, and then heading down tuscany before turning seaward at Vittigliano. I've not done the part between Viareggio and the Cinque Terra, or the short hop from the main route up from Tuscany to Viterbo. but the rest Ive driven. On the major autoroutes, things are pretty low stress as you don't really route into major cities (you route around). Construction and other events aside --- it seems like some of these routes always have works being done. Traffic can be heavy in August, though, as mentioned. All bets are off if you want to trace the coast in a slow journey.
