Hamburg and Berlin/Potsdam

We are returning to Germany in August, spending 3 nights in Hamburg (first visit for us). Then train to Berlin (2nd time there), spending 4 nights. Our plan is then to take the train to Potsdam for 2 nights. After that, we'd relocate to an airport hotel for the last night.

The number of nights for Hamburg is set, but what about spending 2 nights in Potsdam? At first I had read comments that some wished they had spent more than one day, but does two nights seem too many especially given that our last day we will be in no hurry to transfer to the airport hotel?

Appreciate your insights, and also would welcome any recommendations for any of these locations. (We have confirmed that all hotels have full air conditioning.) On one of the Berlin days we were planning on a day trip to Leipzig.

We've been to Lubeck but I'll check out Luneburg and cycling on the Elbe. Thanks!

Two nights in Potsdam really means just one day. I wouldn't have a problem filling that time quite nicely. YMMV -- and I would think that a good guide book would let you decide if there's enough to keep you entertained.

I don’t know if it helps..I was in Hamburg only 24 hours, wish I had more time there.
Potsdam was a day trip from Berlin…I took a bus tour from the train station.
The tour probably touched only on highlights…but I had a feeling that 24 hours would be enough time.

Thanks, kja and danon. In our itinerary, 2 nights in Potsdam equals at least 2+ days -- we'll take the train from Berlin on Monday morning, spend all day Tuesday, and spend the majority of Wednesday including dinner most likely, then train to airport hotel. That's why it's starting to feel like too much (after pouring through guidebooks).

It's very unusual for us to spend only 1-2 nights in one location, but now I'm thinking if we stay in Berlin for 5 nights instead of 4, we can do another day trip from Berlin besides Leipzig.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I really don't mind staying just one night somewhere. And of course, you visit Potsdam from Berlin, even returning the next day if you want to see more than a single day trip allows.
