Traveling to South Africa in August , Family of 5 .. Traveling with Family of 4 ...

Hello... We are traveling for the first time to South Africa in August 2025, we are a family of 5 (two adults, three kids ages 10,13,15) and we are traveling with another family (two adults, two kids ages 10, 16). We are planning on flying into Johannesburg 8/5 AM and spend 4-5 nights on a safari/lodge... luxury but reasonable budget... and then we wanted to take a domestic flight to Cape Town and spend 4-5 nights exploring the area and looking for the best activities there... then domestic flight back to Johannesburg on 8/15 for flight back home... Any suggestions? Ideally we would like to go to a nice, less crowded lodge with family accommodations and kid friendly to allow for the best experience for all of us. Should we speak to a local South Africa tour agent or book directly with lodges/hotels? What are the best places to stay that will give us the best experience? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks! Raed

I think you have to do this as soon as possible since this is high season and many lodges will be booked.

I would contact an agent in South Africa instead of trying to do this yourself.

There are many agencies; the one I've used for many safari/CapeTown/J'Burg trips is this one:

www.southerndestinations.com

Many agents participate on the TripAdvisor /South Africa forum; try to ask your question there as well, as that SA board is much more frequented than this one.

When you talk about upscale lodges,, do you have a daily figure, per person, in mind? Pricing in the private concessions is per person, in my experience, and not per room as in hotels in most other countries I've visited.

Costs can add up very quickly, so you will be very limited finding accommodations within a reasonable budget with only a few months to go before your trip...but do keep in mind that the per person price covers it all.....room , board, usually some or all drinks, game drives and other activities, some transfers between city and lodge or one lodge to another (sometimes).... There are some excellent lodges in Kruger National Park that will cost a lot less than those in the adjacent private concessions.

Do not be discouraged, for many this is the trip of a lifetime (my own partner had never been before and we celebrated his retirement with a trip to South Africa; after we returned, I overheard him tell many people that the experience was Life changing." I've heard this from so many others as well. Once you visit the bush, that old saying that Africa gets in your blood really rings true. People think it willl be a one and only trip but so many of us have returned over and over, that's how magical a trip like this can be.

I', but a traveler, although I've taken about six safari-type trips; but a professional will steer you right--the level of service from SA agents is very high, as is the bar for lodgings in cities like CapeTown and in the bush lodges as well.

One big question you ought to think about: Do you want to do a self-drive in Kruger, for example, and sleep in the SanPark lodges? This is much more economical than choosing private lodges in the concessions of the Sabi Sands, Timbavati, and the other within the country. Again, I am not expert but an agent can give you all the info you require and assist booking. The more precise you can be with the agent about what you want the easier the process will go, so have budget in mind, decide if self-drive ok, are you ok with sleeping in tents, do you need flush toilets, are you ok with buying and cooking your own food, can you self-drive to Kruger Park from your arrival airport or do you want to go on an organized tour with a smalll group of like-minded travelers???/etc etc......

Except for my first safari, in Kenya on a work-related visit, my safaris have been independent, planned by my agent in CapeTown and without others save for the times my partner or friends accompanied me...

With a total of nine people and your timing, I'd be concerned that logistics will quickly become very complicated, especially if you're looking for "luxury but reasonable budget" accommodations. Do you all want to be lodged in the same accommodation, or would multiple rooms be acceptable? Are you thinking of self-drive or more of a packaged tour?

I might be tempted to suggest you think about a place like Sun City or Pilanesberg NP, which have a wide range of accommodation options, are quite family-friendly, and are closer to Johannesberg than the Kruger-area alternatives, which (by land) can take most of a full day to reach. Pilanesberg won't be a Sabi Sand-type visit (few places are) but for a mixed-age group of first-time visitors to SA it might be the ticket.

Just a "what if" thought.
