Iceland Ring Road with Kids

Hello, We will be in Iceland this June with our 2 boys who are 10 and 6. We're planning on stopping in Reykjavík overnight and then driving the ring road over an 8 day period. Would love any suggestion for excursions / activities that children would love, especially any that need to be booked in advance. Our boys are generally very energetic and athletic.

Thank you so much!

Hi Traveler. Not getting many responses to your inquiry pretty much indicates how many people drive the ring road in Iceland. We spent 11 days and 10 nights driving it 9 years ago. I am sure it has changed little since then. Our two girls were the ages of your boys once so I can give you a parents perspective. It will be easier for me to give you ideas if I know in which direction you are driving (clockwise or counter) and in which towns you plan on staying. I will add this, preparing your boys in advance with stories about Iceland and what they will be seeing will be helpful. I don't know where you live but I am guessing everything they will be seeing will seem alien. As it will to you. I will check here daily for your response.

I think you are trying to cover too much ground. We went for the same amount of time and only made it to Diamond Beach. There is too much to see and too many places to explore. Doing the entire road means you'll see Iceland from your car window.

We drove the ring road in 2017 (10 days) and it felt very rushed. I didn't respond to your post earlier because I don't have any kid activity suggestions, but if you're interested in looking at the route we took and what we did along the way, I have a very detailed trip report here:

Trip Report It’s Thursday, it must be Seyðisfjörður. A 10 day Iceland road trip - Fodor's Travel Talk Forums

Trip Advisor has a very active Iceland forum, suggest you also post over there if you haven't already.

Hi, Thank you so much for your response and for your tips. My boys actually just picked up a childrens book each on iceland from their school library and are enjoying reading it and learning more iceland! thank you for that suggestion! We will be driving the ring road clockwise and have stops planned in Blondous, Myvatn, Seydisfjordur, Hofn, Vik and Reykjavik.
