Sussex Gravetye Manor area

Hello,

I’m planning our itinerary for an upcoming trip to England and would love some advice. We’ll be staying at the beautiful Gravetye Manor and are looking for well-balanced days that combine historic houses and gardens, charming villages, great food, and perhaps some shopping.

Sissinghurst, Hever Castle, and Chartwell have caught my interest, but I’m unfamiliar with the area and want to ensure we don’t overpack our days. I’d love recommendations on how best to structure our time while making the most of these experiences. What are the must-dos? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I can't tell you how envious I feel with your choice of accommodation at the wonderful Gravetye Manor! I stayed there in 2023 and was blown away with its breathtaking garden, not to mention the top notch service and dining. There are many, many gardens and historic sites to visit depending on how far you wish to travel each day. But quite nearby are Wakehurst Botanical Garden and Scotney Castle. Great Dixter is an absolute must which you could fit in with a visit to the medieval town of Rye.

Welcome to Fodors. Lucky you -- that is a beautiful property. Its easy to group properties so you can fit in three on a day. How many days are you staying in Sussex?

One day Hever Castle, Penshurst Place and Chartwell are all close enough to each other to make an easy 'three-fer'. The entire route from the hotel and back is less than 50 miles and about 90m minutes total drive time

If you are interested, RHS Wisley would be a 90-ish minute round trip.

Sissinghurst, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle would require an early start because you are staying a bit far west. But would still be a reasonable day trip. And the lovely Bayham Abbey is right on the route so you'd see it without even a slight detour.

There are many fabulous places in the general Kent, East Sussex area -- your biggest time investment for them will be driving from the hotel in West Sussex into East Sussex/Kent.

Other great gardens and houses much closer to the hotel include Wakehurst Place, Borde Hill, Nymans, Petworth House, and Bateman's,
