My wife and I are planning a trip to Spain this March, and I’m super excited! We will be visiting Alicante, Madrid, and maybe Barcelona. I love trying local food and really want to experience some amazing Spanish cuisine. But, as an Indian me and my wife want to enjoy some Indian cuisine on our trip.
I posted earlier asking for recommendations, but I didn’t get any responses. So, I’m trying again, does anyone have any must-visit Indian restaurants, hidden gems, or even street food spots that I shouldn’t miss? Bonus points if they’re not super touristy!
My friend recommended a restaurant in Moraira, Alicante called Guras Curry House. But I would like to get some recommendations from the locals.

Indian restaurants are not very popular in Spain and are normally (although of course not all) in the cheap side, somewhere you may go when you don´t want to spend much money. So do not expect any to be "super touristy", we just do not go much to them (at least where I live, it may be different in other areas, but I believe it´s the same all over Spain):

I did not know that about Benares, but my hotel is a few steps away from that restaurant so I walk past often and it looks lovely.

I wonder if there is an online site for Indian expats living in Madrid and Barcelona that might have some information (???)
If you are determined, you might even phone the Indian embassy in Madrid or the consulate in Barcelona and ask them where their staff likes to eat....


Alicante gets so many travelers from UK that I'd guess there are dozens of Indian eateries in and around that city, but I'd have no idea how good they are.
The problem here is that most travelers on this forum are looking for great Spanish food, not Indian, but of course we understand why you might want some familiar "comfort" food, too.

I understand that India is a very big country and not everywhere they make the same type of cuisine. Are you looking for a specific type of cuisine? If you go to Catalunya I recommend one that is in a village in an area called Garrotxa. From Barcelona you can go by bus (Teisa) and apart from eating you can visit a rural area surrounded by volcanoes (Olot). The restaurant is called La casa del curry and is in Les Planes d'Hostoles. It is 0 touristy, the family that runs it are Sikh and the food is exceptional.

I love spicy food, so I am looking for some places that serve delicious North Indian Food.
Does this restaurant serve such delicacies?

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought that it was the food of southern India that was more spicy than in the north.....not true?

As Revulgo notes, the most elegant, upscale Indian restaurant in Madrid is Benares, with the highest ratings. Indian haute cuisine.

Supposedly, Queen Letizia's favorite Indian restaurant, according to the press, is Indian Aroma in the Letras area on Ventura de la Vega Inexpensive.

Other Indian restaurants that regularly make the "top Indian restaurants in Madrid" list in the press, mostly in the very upmarket Barrio de Salamanca (that are not the bargain basement dozens of Indian restaurants that abound in Lavapiés):

Moraira is a long way from Alicante to just go for a meal, so I'm not sure about that one. I'd guess that you're after Punjabi or Kashmiri food and you might be able to sort that out from here:

Be prepared to be let down as the spice index is incredibly low due to Spaniards intolerance of spicy food. Also, Indian food as seen as quite exotic so the prices are generally quite high. I avoid Indian places in Barcelona, but there are one or two Thai and Vietnamese places that are improving. Still a long way to go on this front however.
