Help with Itinerary for Northern Australia (NT, QLD, NSW) - July 2025
Hello Fellow Travelers,
My wife and I (57-59 years old) are planning a trip to northern Australia in July 2025 and would love your advice on a rough itinerary we’ve been considering. We’ll be flying from Sweden to Singapore, then on to Darwin, with about 30 days to explore parts of Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales. Below is our rough plan, and we would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations:
Thank you in advance for your insights!
Best,
My wife and I (57-59 years old) are planning a trip to northern Australia in July 2025 and would love your advice on a rough itinerary we’ve been considering. We’ll be flying from Sweden to Singapore, then on to Darwin, with about 30 days to explore parts of Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales. Below is our rough plan, and we would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations:
Itinerary Overview:
- Darwin (2-3 days)
- We’re considering staying in Darwin and booking a 2-3 day tour to Kakadu National Park. Alternatively, should we stay at Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel and do day trips? Is 2-3 days enough to see the highlights of Kakadu?
- Cairns (3-4 days)
- Plan to explore the Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation, Port Douglas, and Kuranda. Should we rent a car to explore Port Douglas and Daintree at our own pace, or is it better to book guided tours?
- Magnetic Island & Whitsundays (3-5 days)
- We plan to take the Queensland Coastal Pass to visit Magnetic Island, Hamilton Island, and the Whitsunday Islands. How much time should we spend on each, and any suggestions for other islands or experiences in the region?
- Brisbane to Sydney (2-3 days)
- We’re weighing whether to fly, take the bus, or the train from Brisbane to Sydney. What do you think is the best option for this route?
Thank you in advance for your insights!
Best,

Out of the three main tourist centres, Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas, I think Port Douglas is the nicest of the three. It can be expensive and gets booked out at peak periods. Cairns would have more budget priced accommodation.
We loved our stay on Magnetic Island. There are some good hikes and beautiful views. We saw rock wallabies, two koalas, kangaroos, birds I'd never seen before.
You will need to allow travel time between the islands in particular. From Magnetic Island you'd catch the ferry back to Townsville, then bus or drive to Airlie Beach, then ferry out to Hamilton Island (unless there are flights?).
Public transport outside the main cities is quite poor and slow. For Brisbane to Sydney, I'd fly. Bus will take ages and train is not direct as the rail gauge is different in Queensland and NSW. Most Australians would not use public transport for longer journeys.
