Seniors from Canada, setting up in the Algarve from March 27, 2025 for 12 days.
Looking for suggestions on where to set up home base and rent studio or 1 bedroom apartment.
Will have a rental car. Looking to do day trips in the Algarve.

From our experience, many Canadiens seem to gravitate to the Tavira area, the east coast of the Algarve, to Cabanas de Tavira specifically, as we saw many Canadien flags from their rental there. The winter climate is very mild. We used the western town of Lagos as our first base, then the area around Tavira as our second base. Either would work well, although we preferred the former, but others would choose the latter, closer to the Spain border.

I suggest that you look at the satellite map of the Algarve.
Starting in Faro going eastwards there are barrier islands ( including Tavira), that means that even though the town's are waterfront, they are not beachfront.
The beaches are on the barrier islands, some only accessible by boat, if the beaches are important you may choose a different town.

We encountered Canadian Snowbirds in Tavira but also in other locations.

With a car you can go anywhere in the Algarve, we stayed in the Vilamoura/ Quarteira área and enjoyed it but it's touristy - not for someone looking for small village charm.

In March and early April it won't be very touristy as yet, because Easter doesn't fall until the last ten days of April. It may be that restaurants and hotels may not be fully open till then, but as Easter is late in 2025 they are more likely to open before the holidays. The roads will be quieter so I would lean towards one base instead of two positioned centrally to allow a decent drive both east and west. I'd probably look at Albufeira with easy access to the A22 road running across the Algarve from Tavira in the east and Lagos to the west. You'll save time on changing hotels and Albufeira is a good base for apartments, hotels and restaurants as well as being a nice town in itself.

Fellow Canuck seniors here. Its been some time, but might not Salema work for you? Dunno. We've heard conflicting reports about the degree to which it has since become 'too touristy' (that phrase) or not.

Oh and John, if you might want to listen to some interesting local music whilst on the Algarve, maybe check out the oh-so evocative trad-band 'Madredeus.'
Although they are no longer together, their ensemble work together with their star female singer was excellent.
For contrast, one could listen to Lisbon's more modern 'Dead Combo', a pair of guitar instrumentalists with a dark, spaghetti-western twist.

I would choose Lagos. In my mind, Tavira is too far east for a good part of the Algarve. We rented an apartment on the water's edge and found parking in the back streets. These photos showed where we stayed, the view and the market which is a 5 minute walk from the location.

We spent many holidays in Cabanas de Tavira and a few ones in Carvoeiro and Lagos. Kept going back to Cabanas for it was much quieter than Carvoeiro and Lagos. Although Cabanas is at the far end of the Algarve, we easily visited all the other towns with our rental car.

That's only partly true. When you go further east, as from Manta Rota (Manta Rota, Praia Verde, Montegordo) all the fabulous beaches are accessible on foot.
