We're planning a trip to Switzerland, but we're not sure which must-see places to hit. Do you have suggestions on cities to visit, restaurants to try, or any must-do activities? We're open to everything! This will be my parents' first international trip, so we want to make it extra special. We'll be traveling by car, so any road trip tips are also welcome.

FWIW, public transportation is so easy in Switzerland, and parking in cities so complicated, that you might want to re-think that option.

Do you have any recommendations on places to visit?

My parents are in their 50s. Is it that difficult to travel by car in Switzerland ? I heard there are some requirements, like a vignette or label (i don't know how we call that), to be able to drive there. Any insights?

Switzerland has the best public transportation system in the world - you will not need a car. A car in Switzerland is more trouble than it's worth. You have so little time that I suggest you pick a city such as Lucerne and take a day trip or two from there via public transporation. I am older than your parents and have been visiting Switzerland using public transportation for over 30 years. It's wonderful.

I doubt that traveling by car is difficult in Switzerland, it's just that the trains and buses are incredibly comfortable and convenient. There are some towns that don't permit cars (e.g., Wengen); parking in any city in Europe can be a challenge.

Time of year matters. Without knowing that, I'd suggest that you look at Bern or Luzern if you want to base in a city or the Bernese Oberland area if you want to base in the mountains (perhaps Wengen -- if you skip the idea of having a car -- or Lauterbrunnen).

Assuming you fly into Zurich, you can reach Lucerne in about an hour via train.

Where are you coming from? Are you going anywhere else on this trip? Is your 4 days in Switzerland exclude your flights as well? Sorry if I missed if these were asked and answered previously.

Lucerne is a logistical choice given your listed interests. I'd be concerned you'd only have 2 good jetlag- free days on the ground.

Welcome to Fodors. Ditto Travel_Nerd's questions. Is Switzerland just a portion of a longer European trip or is the entire trip just four days? Four days is a pretty short trip if you are flying in long haul.

And -- what time of year?

Not sure what your parents being middle aged has to do with much of anything. Being in their 50's has little bearing on whether one should drive or take trains. No matter the age - public transport is generally more convenient than driving.

I agree! I had asked about ages because I couldn't tell, from the original post, whether young children might be included.

We’re driving from Paris to Switzerland and considering your positive comments about public transportation, we might park the car and use local transit to avoid any hassles.

We have 4 full days (excluding travel time). To be precise, we’re leaving Wednesday night and returning to France Sunday night.

Our trip is in 2 weeks, and this plan came together quite suddenly, so I haven’t had much time to prepare..

Even though they are middle-aged, I was thinking about a fun activity like the "Jet Boat" by Paragliding Interlaken for them. It looks pretty chill and it will be their first time trying something like this.

Alyssa, you still haven't clarified the "when" this trip is. What month?

Why drive? Have you looked into the potential high coat of dropping off a car in one country from another? I'm sure there are train options available. Not sure if there are night trains possibilities to look into, too.

You know your parents best, but I would not find paragliding to be "chill." But that is me. Edit: I see now the paragliding is the company's name.

Personally, I'd avoid Interlaken. Are you wanting the Swiss portion to be activity-based or more sightseeing based?

This Swiss portion - what is the driving force behind it? Is it because your parents have always wanted to go, or another reason?

For personal reasons, we have no other option but to drive to Switzerland. However, parking the car and using public transportation to explore the cities and do activities sounds like a good plan. We can't travel by train or plane.

We're planning to go in 2 weeks, from August 14th to 18th.

The paragliding I found looks pretty chill for them. I suggested it, and they liked the idea !Sorry, I missed the edit part. We're interested in both visiting landscapes and doing activities that let us explore the city deeply. The "Jet Boat" I found allows us to discover the surrounding landscape!

We chose Switzerland without a particular reason, but we heard from friends that it’s an amazing country to visit, so we decided to go there.

Hmmm.... about 5.5 hours by train from Paris to Lucerne; about 7.5 hours by car. I know which I'd choose!

Maybe that jet boat would be something they'd enjoy. I thought the most wonderful thing about Lake Brienz was how completely calm the waters seemed. To each his/her own! But it seems like you've already decided to go to Interlaken? It's not a place that I, personally, would choose. For that part of Switzerland, I'd rather be in the mountains (Wengen or Lauterbrunnen, as I suggested above) or in a more charming lake-side town (like Thun).

BUT ... if this trip is in 2 weeks, I wonder if you'll have trouble finding lodging. Have you looked?

Posting at the same time ... missed your statement about needing to drive. Sorry.

We wanted a cool activity for them to discover the city since they've never been there, so we thought about doing the Jet Boat, though we haven't decided 100% yet.

We planned 1 day to explore a famous lake and waterfall, 1 day to discover a mountain (not sure which one yet, but I'll consider your advice), and hiking the Aare Gorge (I’m not sure if that's the name in English, haha). For the 3rd day, we don't have many ideas yet, so I'm all ears for any recommendations!

We haven't booked anything yet because we want to plan the itinerary first and then book the hotel. Time is short, so I'm crossing my fingers that some hotels aren't fully booked.

In that area:

• Visit Thun and the Hilterfingen and Oberhofen castles
• Go to Bern -- lovely city, some great museums and gardens, etc.
• Hike in the Bernese Oberland
• Go to Trummelbach Falls -- entirely IN a mountain
• Visit the Alpine Garden on Schynige Platte
• Spend a day (or half of one) at the Ballenberg Open Air Museum

A visit to Giessbach Falls and Lake Brienz -- if that's what you mean by "a famous lake and waterfall" will likely take only half a day, if that.
