Norway

HelloHello!
Two adults are planning a 10 day Norway road trip in mid September. We really need advice on the feasibility of the following itineraries. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Day 1 arrived Oslo, take the transition flight to Stavanger, stay in Stavanger
Day 2 Pulpit rock hiking, stay in Stavanger
Day 3 drive through
Lyserfjord/Ryfylke and Hardangerfjork regions to Bergen from Stavanger, considering taking National Tourist Route, stay in Bergen
Day 4 - tour Bergen, the town, stay in Bergen for a break
Day 5 - self directed Norway in a Nutshell day. take the cruise tour for Naeroyfjord. stay overnight at Balestrand.

Question: this way we may cut the next day driving short and avoid stress from booking lodgings at Flam. Please advice if it is advisable.

Day 6 Drive to Geirangerfjord - full day driving. ?? where to stay? should we stop near Jostedalsbreen rather than going to Geiranger?

Day 7-8 to explore Geirangrfjords region -Geiranger is a crowded destination. Is there a way to avoid the crowds but still get highlights of the region covered?. should we skip and spend nights in another town? We like to do a moderate hike to get close to Briksdalsbreen glacier or its branches, hike to the viewpoints, and see water falls and a cruise.

need help with Day 6,7,8 for where to stay and to do to avoid crowds.

Day 9 drive to Ålesund, Stay at Alesun. We like to drive Ørnevegen – The Eagle Road, Trollstigen – The Troll Ladder

We also like to drive the Atlantic Ocean Way. Should we add another day before fly back Oslo?

Day 10, fly out from Ålesund to Oslo, go home

We did a eight day road trip starting in Bergen and ended in Trondheim. It's included in my Norway trip report:

Trip Report: Norway, July 2009

Geiranger does not get that crowded; it's not the Louvre. If you stay in the town itself you will see the tourists disembarking to take buses to wherever the land tour was arranged for the day. The bay probably can't hold more than a couple of the enormous cruise ships.

The coast farther north is quite sparse of traffic.

I would advise you to do something other than just the worst tourist traps. You've just listed most of them with Pulpit Rock, Flåm, Geirangerfjorden, etc.

First; Hardangerfjorden is definitely worth a day or two.

Secondly; I would spend a day or two at the fjordarms at Sognefjorden. Vist the stavechurch in Luster and the glacier museum at Fjærland. Drive north from Gaupne towards Jostedalsbreen. You could stay at place like the fjord hotel i Fjærland or the mountain cabin at Tungestølen.

There are also other really cool places to stay with a lot of atmosphere. Like Nes Gard (farm).

Third; consider Hjørundfjorden as an alternative to Geirangerfjorden. It is just as scenic and spectacular, but a lot less crowded. You could stay at a place like Christian Gaard and at the same time get a fjord cruise (they do have a shuttle boat).
