Isle of Skye without a car (Scotland)

We plan to be in Scotland in August, and would like to take a 3-day trip from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye. We'd plan to spend one day getting up there (and one getting back to Edinburgh), perhaps taking the West Highland train from Edinburgh to Fort Williams, which is supposed to be incredibly scenic. On the second day, we'd like to take an escorted day trip to Skye, preferably from Fort William. However, most of the day trips go from either Portree or Inverness. Should we take a bus to Portree from Fort William? Or are there you tour companies leavaing from Fort William? Or private tours (we're just 2 people)? Other suggestions? Is the train trip from Edinburgh to Inverness almost as scenic as the West Highland? Thanks!

Much better idea IMO would be to take this tour from Edinburgh

Or - if you can spare an additional day, this one https://www.rabbies.com/en/scotland-...nds-4-day-tour
