Barcelona Or Madrid?

Welcome to Fodors . . . just to let you know they don't charge by the word How about some more details??? Like Wnen -- Time of year can make a difference. How long will you be in Spain -- only a few days so only time for one city, or is this part of a longer visit? What sorts of things do you enjoy? etc . . .

Plenty of bewitching women in both
Hmmm some people love Barcelona like me. Some love Madrid.
Barcelona tends to be more in your face. Madrid feels more controlled.
It also depends on what you want to do. What you enjoy.
Really the only way to decide is to try both.

We preferred Barcelona for the simple reason that when the city became “too much” there was always the option to escape to the beach; always a good option to have on a city break. As other posters have said though - depends on the time of year you’re visiting and what sort of things you want to do.
