Our family, age 66, son and wife and 2 kids ages 9 and 6, daughter and husband and kids 3 and 6. Total 6 adults, 4 kids 3 to 9. Thinking of a week at a nice hotel, maybe in the park. Does need to be nice but nut luxurious. Maybe even one large cabin. Would want day trips for scenery, wildlife. Maybe a snowmobile outing. Please give me strategies, weather hints, things to see. Would consider splitting time between 2 locations so as to see all the park. Thanx

Late March is an awkward time to visit. It's too late for the winter season and too early for spring. The roads close to oversnow travel in very early March and reopen to cars (weather permitting) in the latter part of April. If you wish snowmobiling, perhaps go in January or February. Only 2 lodges are open in the winter season, Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Accommodations inside the park close after the first week of March. Oversnow road access starts to close then and is fully closed by mid-March. In late March the only open road (for driving, not snowmobiling) is the one that goes through the northern part of the park between Gardiner MT and Cooke City-Silver Gate MT which is open year round. You can get to Mammoth Hot Springs if you want to see a thermal area but you can't get to Old Faithful or any area not located along the northern road. You can cross country ski/snowshoe/hike, wildlife watch, snowmobile in the national forest weather permitting, there's a hot springs place about 10 minutes north of Gardiner but I don't know if that's enough to fill a week.

If you can travel earlier, that opens up snowmobile/snowcoach access to Old Faithful and Canyon. It's also well worth staying at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge in winter.

If you aren't stuck on touring/staying in Yellowstone, which as Patty said, isn't really an option in late March, you might check out Big Sky. There should still be snow sports going on during your timeframe.

We've split a week between Big Sky and Yellowstone (from Gardiner) in winter.

Another possibility is to switch to Grand Teton. The main road through the park is open year round. Dornan's cabins are open in March and Triangle X Ranch might be too. You can also stay in/near Jackson. There are more activities available since it's a ski destination.
