In another thread there was talk of posting our photos from India. I'll start the ball rolling with a few from the scanned slide archive. Hope to see a lot more.



Chandni Chowk, Delhi

Some weeks later in Jodhpur we sat on some steps, and timed 15 minutes counting how many different forms of conveyance passed by. I think it was 30. Cars, trucks, buses, bicycles, motorcycles, tuk-tuks, push carts, pull carts, ox-carts, donkey carts, horses, camels, elephants, ….

Our big splurge of the trip. Back then I think it was less than fifty bucks a night, still quite a lot, especially after staying in a two dollar dak-house dormitory.

The story goes that the master carvers were paid in gold equal to the weight of their marble shavings.



Honeymooner

Mount Abu is a popular location for couples on honeymoon. We became friendly with a couple at our hotel, had several meals together, and stayed in contact for many years afterward.



“The Green Slime Lady”

This woman was drinking a horrible looking slimy green concoction. Little did we know she was ahead of her time and probably having a highly nutritious smoothie.

We were amazed by this place, and the nearby Ellora temples.

Indeed the Kailasha temple was incredible. At the time (1977) we wondered why it wasn't more famous (at least to us of course). It's rarely on a "world's greatest architectural monuments" type of list (though it is on Fodor's), but we left impressed at the audacity of it's concept and construction.

It was carved in the 8th century AD from the side of cliff. Work started at the top and moved downward, chipping, chipping, chipping away at the bedrock. This minimized the need to build scaffolding. Not sure how long it took, seems like I read anything from 20 to 100+ years.

My pictures don't do it justice at all but I'll pop some in here anyway.

I inadvertently interrupted a shave. When I pointed to my camera questioningly, they nodded and posed for me. This was in Old Delhi.


These girls spotted me taking pictures from a distance and came running over asking me to take theirs. They were delighted to see the result. This was in Jaipur.

I loved watching him work, sifting the grain. In Jaipur.

Nice to see some regular pictures through your beautiful photographic eyes. All pictures are simpler but you made them extraordinary with your photography skill and knowledge. Thanks for sharing. India is looking like Bangladesh. Both countries are very similar to look.

They used to be one country. What is now Bangladesh was East Pakistan until 1971 when they split from West Pakistan and became an independent nation.

Used to be called East Bengal before it was renamed East Pakistan BTW
