Most romantic European destinations

Hi to all,

If you could choose your top three most romantic European destinations, which would they be?

This should be fun!

As Belinda says, any place is romantic if you're with the right person. Even Amsterdam.

I'd add Kraków to the list.

I think Amsterdam is very romantic. All those gorgeous bridges with twinkling lights. It's more than drugs and prostitutes you know.

Amsterdam - yes romantic is something no one can argue with if it's romantic to you. I don't find Paris romantic at all - very busy traffic and streets, obnoxiously dirty air, etc. But I can see why some feel it's romantic - just the Eiffel Tower in sight from everywhere makes it that way I guess. But many parts are really dull.

Blackpool to me is also romantic but would not be to most sane folks. But I love the old trams trundling up and down the boardwalk.

Speaking of romantic, studies have shown that romantic intensity drops off as soon as you exchange names.

I pick Oslo and Stockholm.

Thanks for your responses. The reason I am asking is that I want to plan a getaway for my husband and I for his 45th birthday in late May and I really need to decide where to go for a week. I started researching some of the places you have all mentioned so this may take me some time.

Please don't stop sharing your thoughts.

Uh, yes I am aware of that. I still didn't find the city "romantic" in any way. Too harsh, too cold (and i was there in the summer-time).

"any place is romantic if you're with the right person."

I have to disagree. Anyone ever been to Mazamet? I could have been there with George Clooney and still been miserable.

And I agree that there is nothing terribly romantic about Amsterdam, except the relief a couple may feel upon returning to a cosy hotel room after escaping death by being run over by a tram or a raging herd of bicyclists.

1. Paris - just exudes romance
2. Venice - an empty St. Mark's Square late at night with bands playing at opposite end coffee cafes
3. Prague - walking the Charles Bridge at night

St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, near Nice, France. Hôtel le Hameau, near St-Paul-de-Vence, like a little village set in orange groves.
