10 days in Laos
I decided to start a separate post for this, as it was getting complicated.

Are you flying in to Vientiane or Luang Prabang? If Vientiane, then the beaten tourist trail is 3/4 nights in and around Vientiane, bus [4 hours] to Vang Vieng beautiful scenery all around] for 3 nights, then bus [6 hours] to Luang Prabang for the balance of your stay. There are other places but they'll eat into your time.
You might like this link about the month by month weather conditions in the whole SE Asia Region.
We can fly into Vientiane or LP, but will fly out of LP. Thanks for that input. Do you have any more detail on the areas you mention. I also had another reply as below.
I see on other sites that Pakse, Champasak, 4000 islands are mentioned.
This is some other input I had.
The sights in Laos are very spread out, and internal travel is not rapid. So you might want to stay in the centre of the country. You could spend a day or two in Vientiane, plus a day trip to Nong Khai, which is a pleasant little town just across the Mekong in Thailand, which has some agreeable riverside walks. There are two tourist spots between Vientiane and Luang Prabang - either Vang Vieng, which is an outdoor adventure centre, or Phonsavan, which is near the 'mysterious' Plain of Jars - a giant archaeological site. All that, plus the necessary bus journeys could take you to Luang by 24 December. Luang is worth a couple of days, plus there are a couple of day trip sites nearby - ancient temples, caves etc.

Nong Khai is very nice. It's sat right by the Mekong, and well worth crossing the Friendship Bridge for. We stayed here for a week before crossing into Laos...

If you cross into Thailand for the day, will you not have to pay for a visa to enter back into Laos, unless of course you've paid for a multi-entry.
If you want a lot of detail on places you could look at the individual Wikitravel or Wikivoyage pages. We really enjoyed Vang Vieng, and while it might be a big outdoor adventure centre for some, there are other attractions without getting involved in any extreme sports.
We based ourselves in Luang Prabang for a week, and thoroughly enjoyed our time.
