Innisfree Garden, a spectacular site in the Hudson Valley
This beautiful site definitely belongs on the A-list of places to visit in the Hudson Valley. Our visit there over the weekend took our breath away.
To quote from its brochure: "Recognized as one of the 'world's ten best gardens,' Innisfree is a powerful icon of 20th century landscape design. Over 50 years in the making....Innisfree merges the essence pf Moderism ideas and traditional Chinese and Japanese garden design principles with a nuanced reading of its glacial landscape. The result is a distinctly American stroll garden 0n 185 acres surrounding a large simmering lake--a sublime composition of rock, water, wood and sky."
Located in Millbrook, NY, it's easy to find, just off the Taconic State Parkway. It could easily be tied in with a visit to Hyde Park, which is about 20 miles away.
It ranks right up there with the Storm King Art Center.

I recently visited and loved it, too. Another wonderful garden in the area is Wethersfield Gardens. http://www.wethersfieldgarden.org

Innisfree has been there since time immemorial it seems, slow to be noticed - (althoug we went there first when we moved from Phila. to Dutchess County in 1971.) There seems to be a resurgence of interest, for which I am happy.
We live about 2 miles away in the Village. Was hoping to catch up with Skatedancer when she came recently, but Boo Hoo, it didn't work out. Next time!
Wethersfield is close by, as well. Worth a trip to see both. If you are into historical gardens - google Bellefield, which is on the FDR site, and has been restored by a group of dedicated volunteers.
So much to see in this area. We are lucky.
However, nothing beats Storm King, speaking of World Class
