Penang Restaurant Recommendations

Hello!

We will soon be spending several days in Penang, and I would love any restaurant recommendations. Prefer Malaysian or other Asian food. If you have any favorite dishes, I'd love that info too.

Thanks in advance!

You can't say you've eaten in Penang without going to a Hainan chicken rice restaurant in Chinatown. I'm as sure as I can be that the one I visited was Wen Chang, 3rd on this list.
Best Chicken Rice in Penang ? FoodAdvisor
I doubt as a gweilo I'd know the difference between #1 & #3. I went looking for it, was seated at a table with others and not usually that social, I found it a great experience, memorable because of the people and because of the simple fresh food. Go there, or another, for this well-known specialty.

You're welcome. I'm in Penang at the moment having arrived a couple of days ago after spending 3 weeks in Bangkok. My poor digestive system needs some rest. LOL! I'm waiting for my Malaysian friends to arrive from KL today and then we will go out and eat at least once today. Yikes!!!

Happy Travels!

Guenmai, I must ask - did you stay at 394 Maharat Guesthouse? It's at the top of my list and would love a first-hand experience (sorry all for the divergence).

I'm sitting here in my room reading the recent issue of Destin Asia magazine and there's an article about Hotel Jen, here in Penang, and which has had a US$14-million-dollar renovation. I didn't know about the hotel. But, if one books a month in advance, one gets 15% off on all room categories with an additional 20% off on food and non-bar drinks and 25% off on massages. So, I thought that I would post the information as who knows, there might be someone reading this thread who might be interested.

To be honest when we were in Penang we ate mainly on the street and the food, especially the soups were incredible!

Thanks, welltraveledbrit! We are in Penang now and have eaten all too well. We head to Langkawi tomorrow then back to Penang for two days. I'll look for the soups.

I'm glad you ate well in Penang. I can't believe that I forgot to highly recommend, Kebaya Restaurant, inside of the 7 Terraces boutique hotel. It's one of the best meals I have had in S.E. Asia. My best friend and I ate there 3 years ago and she commented that it was her best meal. Maybe you can add it to your list for next time. Smiles.

The street food in Penang is excellent. Grazing the stalls is one of the best ways to eat in Georgetown. Apart from the streetfood, one of the best places we ate at was Tek Sen in Carnarvon Street. Superb Chinese food, te roast port is amazing as is the stingray. Difficult not to over order. Bet way to get a table is to be there before te doors open at 6pm. There is usually quite a queue for a table otherwise.

Thanks, Guenmai and crellston! We are on Langkawi now, and will have two more nights in Penang before heading home, so this is helpful! Also, it looks like we could be making another trip sooner than we imagined - possibly this fall. So I'll keep these on file if we don't get to these places this time. Just hoping I can survive that flight twice in a year, lol.
